A dark and deep red, medium- to full-bodied, this is tightly meshed and firm. Reveals dense tannins, yet maintains a supple grace and equilibrium overall. Boasts a rich streak of tarry mineral that underscores flavors of blackberry puree, black licorice, herbed olive and iron. The finish is long and lightly juicy, with accents of vanilla, spice and herbs. Best from 2023 through 2035. 580 cases made, 300 cases imported. ... More details

The 2017 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore Daginestra keeps me at the edge of the glass with a mix of black tea leaves, savory foreign spice, dusty black currants and crushed ashen stone forming its beguiling bouquet. This is surprisingly vibrant and lifted on the palate, with cooling mineral and herbal tones carried across a core of bright acidity, as tart wild berry fruits slowly saturate toward the close. It finishes grippy yet long and almost crunchy in feel, as balsamic nuances and hints of Baker's chocolate slowly taper off. The 2017 will require further cellaring to find its inner harmony, but it will be worth waiting for.

The scent of a freshly baked berry tart topped with whipped cream and fresh sprigs of mint wafts out of the glass before this Aglianico from old vines delivers its real substance, with a gamy palate of grilled lamb chops, cherry-plum compote and dark chocolate. This sophisticated wine has a long, leisurely finish.
Winery
Ruby red in color with herbal aromas of mint and rosehip on the nose. Crisp red fruit on the palate with structured acidity and graphite minerality on the palate, all backed by strong tannins and a long finish.

Varietal: Aglianico

Aglianico is a black skinned grape most commonly associated with the exquisite wines of the Campania region of Italy. It thrives most happily in hot and dry climates, and as such, has had plenty of success in the New World, particularly in the United States, where it is used to great effect in many red wines. It was believed to come from Greece several thousand years ago, brought by Pheonician tradesman, and was wildly popular in Roman times, when it was used in the finest wines made by the Roman empire. Aglianico grapes produce full bodied red wines which have a high tannin and acid content. As such, it has excellent ageing potential, and with a standard amount of time in a barrel, it rounds out and mellows to produce beautifully balanced wines.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
