The 2016 Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge is an opaque red-purple colour, with almost irresistible, youthful scents of musky rosebuds over sweet, crisp black fruits. Those aromas prove a faithful summary of what you’ll find on the palate: a lively cascade of fresh, pure, zesty fruit, hops, pink grapefruit and aromatic rosebud charm. There are some gathered tannins behind the fruits, but they're not a prominent part of this midweight wine’s architecture. This high-energy young red is perfumed, beguiling and graceful, endowed with singing charm. (Editor's note: Goedhuis price below is for six bottles in bond, released 'en primeur' in autumn 2017.) ... Bottled just two weeks before my visit, the flagship red 2016 IGP Saint Guilhem le Desert was showing very well. A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, with single-digit proportions of other varieties, it spent a year in barrel (about 15% new oak). It's an herb-tinged wine, with leafy cassis notes and some redder fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it shows typical Cabernet Sauvignon restraint and structure on the palate, accompanied by soft, dusty tannins. Give it a couple of years, but then it should drink well for over a decade.

A vivid and bright red with blackberry and blueberry aromas, as well as undertones of hot stones. Violets, too. Medium body, silky and refined tannins and beautiful intensity. A delicious finish. Bright and focused. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, malbec and pinot noir — for the most part. Drink or hold.

A sleek but layered red, featuring ripe currant and raspberry notes woven together with mineral, herb, floral and licorice details. Tangy and muscular, with full tannins framing the spice, herb and earth notes on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. Drink now through 2025. 12,500 cases made.
Winery
To be drunk in its youth (in the first 3 years) to enjoy its superb fruit aromas. Or to be open from the 5th year to 20th year to appreciate its amazing ageing potential. Perfect with complex dishes, red meat, game (especially venison and wild-boar) and cheeses.

Region: Languedoc Roussillon

The French region of Languedoc Roussillon can claim to be amongst one of the oldest continuing wine regions in the world, with a history which stretches back to the ancient Greeks almost three thousand years ago. Today, Languedoc Roussillon is recognized as a region associated with fine wines made from many of the noble grapes, and with over 700,000 acres under vine, is a veritable powerhouse of viticulture which has helped shape the world of wines as we know it. Languedoc Roussillon is situated in the very south of France, and enjoys a fine, hot, Mediterranean climate which allows the vines there to reach full ripeness and provide reliable yields each year. Languedoc Roussillon today produces over a third of France's wines, and the bottles which leave the wineries of the region remain popular across the globe.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
