This vintage delivers appealing aromas of stone fruit, honeysuckle and wet stone, with only the slightest vegetal tone. There's a lovely play between the creamy texture and crunchy acidity on the palate, highlighting flavors of orchard fruit, salt and snow pea. It finishes long, with stony minerality. The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc shows restrained aromas of fig and melon on the nose, followed by ripe notes of nectarine on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied and richly textured, with a long, silky finish. It may age a bit better than some other classic Marlborough Sauvignons, but don't hold it beyond about 2021.

This is rather restrained in the spectrum of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It’s refined and impeccably balanced as always, though perhaps not as intense as in some vintages. There are attractive aromas of nettles and elderflowers and a whiff of flint. It’d be nice to have a longer finish to extend the enjoyment.
Winery
Aromas of cassis and passionfruit are first to emerge, with guava, crisp pear and white peach adding a delicious fruit salad intricacy. On the palate, it’s generous yet refreshing, with ripe pineapple and a lime sherbet zing, layered with elderflower and hints of citrus blossom. A classic example of Greywacke’s interpretation of the famous Marlborough style – ripe, textural and scrumptious – with the volume turned well down.

green grapes

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is widely considered to be one of the finest varietals of white wine grapes. The green skinned fruit is notable for ripening relatively early in the year, due to the fact that it prefers milder temperatures and cannot maintain its distinctive flavors in hot climates. As such, it has become a favorite grape varietal for wineries in many very different countries around the world, where it can benefit from brisk, coastal breezes and mild early summers. Sauvignon Blanc is revered for its freshness and zesty character, and generally produces wines which are dry and very crisp on the palate. However, there are a wide variety of wines produced from this wonderfully versatile grape – with many wineries preferring to age the fermented juices in oak, or allowing malolactic fermentation to add a creamier, buttery finish to the grassy and tropical, citrus flavors it often carries.
barrel

Region: Marlborough

When it comes to New Zealand wines, the Marlborough region is the most highly regarded and by far the largest in the country. The region itself has been closely associated with high quality white wines for over forty years now, and consistently produces some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc wines in the world. However, in recent years it has begun to expand its repertoire, and wineries have been busily raising Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in Marlborough, amongst certain others. The excellent soil and ideal climate the region benefits from ensures the fruit there ripens slowly, achieving maximum flavor and expression of terroir. Furthermore, Marlborough's situation on the north easternmost tip of New Zealand's South Island ensures there are plenty of cooling oceanic breezes crossing the vineyards, making this one of the most perfect locations in the world for quality viticulture.

Country: New Zealand

As with nearby Australia, New Zealand has over the past century proven itself to be a superb location for producing high quality wines in vast amounts, with much of the cooler regions of both islands being used primarily for vine cultivation. New Zealand wineries are notable for their enthusiasm in regards to experimentation, and for utilizing modern technologies and methods to make the most of the imported grape varietals which flourish in the rich, fertile soils and oceanic climate. In recent years, it has been the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines which have gained the most attention, as a result of their smoky character and ability to carry the mineral rich nature of the terroir they grow in. Changing consumer interests have brought about a considerable rise in the production of organic and sustainable wines in New Zealand, of which again, the Sauvignon Blanc varietals are leading the way in regards to excellence, flavor and overall character.
