A good rest on lees in the cellar through to May 2015 has seen this salmon-colored rosé develop a wealth of dried porcini mushroom aromas that really make a savory statement. It's gently smoky and shows some dried cherry fruits too – a gastronomic dream! The palate's smoothly cut with creamy red-cherry-fruit flavors and hints of pink grapefruit. Radiant, star-bright ruby with vermilion highlights. Burgundian scents of the forest, with fraises des bois, undergrowth and even redcurrant. A silky, captivating mouthfeel, the palate cloaking without being heavy. The expression of a warm, later harvest, and the rosé is more distinguished and elegant than the blanc in 2005. Wonderfully aromatic and finely detailed, with a layered profile of dried apricot, raw almond, honey, ground coffee, nutmeg and orange bergamot. Shows power and focus, yet this is set in a sleek, finely knit frame. The chalky minerality firms the long, smoky finish. Disgorged July 2015. Drink now through 2026. 100 cases imported.

A cuvée first introduced in 1983, the 2005 La Grande Année Rosé comes from a single parcel and is more savory, tertiary, and mineral-laced than the la Grande Année cuvée. Aged 10 years in bottle on lees, this medium to full-bodied, complex, incredibly pretty 2005 has classic notes of dried cherries, toasted spice, chalky minerality, and dried flowers. It’s a singular beauty that blossoms with time in the glass and should shine for another 10-15 years.

The 2004 La Grande Année Rosé is based on 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay, 89% from Grand Cru villages and 11% from Premier Crus. Disgorged in July 2013, this salmon colored rosé champagne displays fine red berry and floral flavors on the nose, whereas the palate is vibrant, taut and linear; it is full of tension, power and minerality, and extremely refreshing but not as elegant and refined as the white twin. The finish is a little bit stringent.

A pretty, delicate wine, the 2005 Brut Rosé La Grande Année is also a bit more intriguing than the Grande Année, as it has more mid-palate pliancy and greater overall depth. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, cinnamon and rose petal notes inform the effortless, gracious finish. Disgorged: May 2015.

Bollinger is often considered the ultimate food pairing Champagne, and La Grande Année Rosé 2005 is no exception. This wine pairs beautifully with duck breasts, quail, guinea fowl or foie gras. It serves as a great enhancement to oriental cuisines, and complements rhubarb or red berry crumble beautifully.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

The careful blending of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes has long been the secret to the success of the famous sparkling wines of the Champagne region. The wines of this region have gone down in history as the finest example of France's sparkling produce, and the methods of processing the grapes in this region have been imitated in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are actually seven different grape varietals allowed to be included in a Champagne sparkling wine, although grape varietals such as Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Pinot Gris are used less and less commonly in its production. Whilst the Chardonnay varietal grapes offer their distinctive biscuit flavor and wonderful astringency, it is the Pinot Noir grapes (most commonly used for producing beautifully light red wines) which give the Champagne wines their length and backbone.

The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.
