91-93 From one of my favorite producers, the 2020 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine reveals a dense purple hue to go with a beautiful perfume of blue and black fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and ground pepper. This pure, medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced Crozes has nicely integrated acidity, ripe, building tannins, and a great finish. Give it a few years and drink over the following decade. ... Dark magenta. Smoky black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by lively mineral and black pepper accents. Offers energetic boysenberry, cherry-cola and violet pastille flavors, along with notes of black pepper and olive paste. The floral note repeats on the persistent finish, which features well-knit tannins and lingering spiciness.

Hints of black olive wind around and through the blackberry and cherry core of the 2020 Crozes Hermitage. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and ripe, with a velvety feel and ample length, this is a fine example of the appellation.

Offers mulled red and black cherry fruit supported by dried anise and apple wood notes, with a light-handed toasty accent on the mineral-edged finish. Drink now through 2026. 5,000 cases made, 356 cases imported.

Varietal: Syrah

Whilst there remains plenty of debate over which is the 'correct' name for the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, nobody is in any doubt about the influence and popularity this grape has had over recent decades. For centuries, this varietal has been used in single variety and blended wines in the regions of France it is most closely associated with, yet the 20th century saw it become one of the definitive grape varietals of New World red wines, where its big, robust character and spicy, berry-rich flavors proved to be a hit with international audiences. Today, Shiraz/Syrah is said to be the seventh most widely planted grape varietal in the world, and is used for a remarkably wide variety of quality red wines – including still, sparkling and fortified varieties.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
