From the bouquet alone, you’d think that the 2013 Le Mattoline was an Amarone, not a Valpolicella Superiore. Here I find masses of medicinal cherries, cloves, licorice and potpourri. However, on the palate, this leans more toward the savory spectrum, coming across as remarkably pure and energetic, with tart wild berries and spices saturating yet then refreshed by nervous acidity. There’s a cheek-puckering feel through the finale, as notes of cranberry and sour citrus resonate beneath an air of violet florals.

Wild cherry and pomegranate fruit flavors are accented by hints of eucalyptus, orange peel, anise and mineral in this well-meshed, medium-bodied red. Chalky tannins firm the lingering, spiced finish. Drink now through 2023. 800 cases made, 300 cases imported.

The Gini family, renowned producers of white wines from the hills of Soave Classico, purchased some land in the Valpolicella zone in the early 1990s to make reds. They air-dried a portion of the grapes for this wine for several weeks, and then aged the wine in large Slavonian casks for two years. It’s a full-bodied, hedonistic rendering of Valpolicella, with succulent red-fruit flavors laced with notes of licorice and bay leaf. An underlying earthiness grounds the fruit flavors while vibrant acidity keeps the structure taut and cleanses the finish.

Varietal: Corvina Blend

Corvina varietal grapes have been grown in Italy for well over a thousand years, and are most closely associated with the coastal region of Veneto, where they are used to fantastic effect in the finest wines of the region. Most notably, Corvina grapes are used as a primary varietal in the blended Amarone and Valpolicella wines – two aged wines which make the most of the potential Corvina has for maturation. The rather high acidity levels in Corvina grapes make them an excellent candidate for aging, as the acids mellow over time and reveal their wonderfully complex and deep flavors of sour cherries and almonds. The thick skins of the Corvina grapes result in a bright crimson wine, and the skins themselves have relatively low tannin levels, making these wines very drinkable and delightfully light in body.

The wine region of Veneto in north-eastern Italy has long been associated with fine wines, but also with the spirit of innovation which is typical of the region and which made it an important area of Europe throughout history. Indeed, today Veneto's wine-makers are recognized as the most modernized in all of Italy, using contemporary techniques to make the best of the high quality grape varietals which flourish in the region.
