Bronze-golden in color, the 2019 Grauer Burgunder opens with a clear and elegant, pretty intense and finely concentrated nose of ripe pears and reveals the purity and flintiness of limestone soils. Full-bodied, fresh and grippy, with fine salinity and stimulating purity as well as fine tannins, this is a fresh and vibrant yet also rich and mouth-filling Pinot Gris that should be aerated for one or two hours. The finish is tense and salty and very promising. 13.5% alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in September 2021. ... More details

Mineral harmony. The color, which tends slightly to orange, documents the mashing time. Filling and melted, yet fresh, mineral and cool. Slight hints of ripe yellow fruits, herbs and flint. Thanks to mature acidity, harmoniously balanced, yet unmistakably decorative iron. Perfect as a meal companion. This Pinot Gris has aging potential of at least five years.

Varietal: Pinot Gris

The Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris grape varietal is now one of the most widely grown vines in the world, due to the surge in popularity of Pinot Grigio wines over the past twenty years or so. These grayish-blue fruits, which hang in their distinctively conical bunches, are responsible for a very broad range of wines famous for their variety of color tones and flavors Pinot Grigio varietal grapes are highly influenced by terroir, climate and particularly the skill and expertise of the vintners who process them. As such, there are full bodied, amber colored wines made from this grape, and there are equally delicious yet far leaner, paler, lighter bodied and crisp white wines made from the same species in other parts of the world.

Country: Germany

Despite being known primarily for sweet and semi-sweet white wines, Germany actually produces a surprisingly large and varied range of wines, with many reaching an extremely high standard and being very well received on the world stage. The terrain across much of the southern parts of the country is extremely fertile, with mineral rich soils adding a wonderful edge to already excellent grapes, and thus resulting in delicious and highly elegant white and rosé wines. The climate in many parts of Germany also allows for some more unusual wine-making practices, with certain regions specializing in the highly aromatic and distinctive 'ice-wines' which are gaining popularity by those looking for something a little more intense and unusual. With these wines, the producers allow the grapes to freeze through the early frosts, resulting in a higher sugar content and a fantastic set of flavors and aromas in the finished product. Germany has long since favored quality over quantity, and a new enthusiasm for fine wine within the country is producing truly exciting results, using a blending of traditional and contemporary techniques.
