Here's a prototypical example of Beaune 1er Cru that combines generosity and subtlety. Lovely red berry and delicate spice aromas are wrapped around the ample, but very well proportioned tannins, that should give this a long future. Hard to believe that this comes from such a difficult vintage. Long, spicy and savory finish that makes an impressive statement. Drink or hold. ... More details

This classic wine in the Chanson portfolio has a bit of the forward wild strawberry notes of the Clos des Mouches and a bit of the structure of the Beaune Grèves. There are hints of cocoa, confit orange peel, smoke, and wild herbs. The grapes are from the 4.40-hectare Chanson monopole up-slope from Cent Vignes. They are vinified as whole clusters and aged in cask (25% new). The result should open up in several years and will age reliably for another twenty.

In this elegant and ripe nose, aromas of fresh cranberries, red cherries and pomegranate intermingle with red rose petals, brown mushroom, white peppercorn and thyme, kissed by a hint of clove and black tea leaf. The palate is opulent, with wild strawberries and ripe black plums embraced by rosehip and wild thyme. This delicious wine is balanced and shows great energy in addition to a long finish of red florals and black pepper.

89-92 This is also exceptionally pretty and perfumed with a slightly more deeply pitched nose that features notes of lilac, plum, violet and newly turned earth. There is excellent volume to the muscular and powerful medium-bodied flavors that deliver good if not genuinely special persistence on the overtly austere and complex if slightly lean finish. I suspect that this will successfully age out but it won't be right away.
Winery
Dark color. Intense aromas of cherries and small dark olives. Well-structured, ample and complex, true to its terroir. Very long and fleshy finish with well-integrated tannins.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

Region: Burgundy

The region of Burgundy has become synonymous with high quality red wines, but in actual fact the region consistently produces a wide variety of fine wines of many different styles, rigorously protected by French wine laws designed to keep reputations and quality at a very high level. The region benefits greatly from a warm and sunny summer climate, which, coupled with the excellent quality soils which typify the region, and centuries of experience and expertise, has led to the region being known all over the world for the excellence of its produce. The majority of grapevines grown here are of the Pinot Noir varietal, which has helped Burgundy become known as the definitive region for elegant and smooth red wines, but Chardonnay grapes and many others are also grown in abundance and used to make both still and sparkling wines.

Country: France

It is widely understood and accepted that the finest wines in the world come out of France. Whether you are drinking a vintage bottle from one of the famed Grand Cru wineries of Bordeaux - such as Chateau Margaux or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - or a more simple and affordable bottle from one of the lesser known appellations in Burgundy, the likelihood is that the wine is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, and has a fine, balanced structure typical of almost all French produce. This reputation for excellence is taken extremely serious by the French, with dozens of regularly updated laws and regulations ensuring the quality and accurate labeling of wines. Such dedication and passion for fine wine, representative of the region in which it is produced, means customers can be assured that when they buy a bottle from France, they are buying something almost certain to please and delight.

Appellation: Cote De Beaune

The stunning and historic appellations of Cote De Beaune in France date back centuries, and are a vitally important center for the fine French wine industry. Located in the southern half of the Cote d'Or, Cote De Beaune is widely renowned for producing what are said to be some of the finest white wines in the world. Indeed, the Chardonnay grapes which flourish in the beautiful climatic conditions of Cote De Beaune ripen fully after the hot summers, and contain an impressive array of flavors and aromas, as well as many of the best features of the superb terroir they grow on. Pinot Noir is the region's other key grape varietal, and the red wines of Cote De Beaune are also considered to be of a very high quality indeed.
