The pink wave sweeping the wine world at present hasn’t left Champagne behind -- but Champagne’s way with pink wine is as distinctive as the rest of its wine offer. You cannot make wines here which are vanishingly pale, petal-pretty and evanescent: there is just too much character, strike and drive on offer in Champagne’s raw materials. There are many great Champagne ripostes to the pink festival of restraint elsewhere, but this salmon-copper rose, with its cavalier autumn fruits and its sheer breadth and audacity of flavour, struck our judges as one of the most memorable. Long, bold flavours subside slowly, vinously and lingeringly in this great gastronomic rose wine. (Best in Show) - DWWA 2021 ... More details

The new release of Heidsick's NV Rose Reserve is based on the 2012 vintage, with the usual 20% of reserve wines and some 6% still red wine from Les Riceys in the Aube. Already exhibiting considerable complexity, it wafts from the glass with scents of orange rind, red plums, gingerbread and red berries. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny textured and fleshy, with lively acids and an attractively vinous profile. It was disgorged a few months ago with 11 grams per liter dosage.

A toasty rosé Champagne, rich with hints of coffee liqueur and grilled nut, but framed by chiseled acidity that focuses the range of flavor, including baked raspberry, nectarine, candied ginger and verbena. Long and creamy, with a finely-detailed mousse. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Disgorged 2020. Drink now through 2026. 510 cases imported.

This is a finely balanced Champagne, hinting at red fruits with a dry edge and great fruitiness. It has bottle age that adds an extra dimension to the wine's fruit and acidity. This bottling, with its maturity, is ready to drink.

A slew of red-berry, candied-orange and leaf-tea aromas welcomes you to this well-structured rosé Champagne. Bright acidity that’s quite pronounced at the slightly vegetal finish, but this also provides some tension. Based on 2014 base wines with 25% reserve wines, mostly of 3-8 years of age, the color coming from 5% pinot noir red wine from Les Riceys. Disgorged in 2021. Drink or hold.

The NV Rosé Réserve is an attractive, aperitif-styled Rosé to drink now and over the next handful of years, while the flavors remain bright. This release is based on 2012. Now with two years on the cork, the Rosé Réserve offers lovely complexity in its slightly burnished dried cherry, crushed flower and spice nuances. Disgorged in 2017.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

Whilst Champagne sparkling wines are most commonly made with a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varietals, there are actually seven fine grape varietals allowed by French wine law for inclusion in the wines of this region. These include Arbanne, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and and Petit Meslier alongside the others, although these four are being used less and less in the modern age. Champagnes are normally blended wines, although the popularity of single variety 'blanc de blanc' Champagnes made solely with Chardonnay grapes, and 'blanc de noir' wines made only with Pinot Noir varietal grapes are becoming more and more popular. The blending process found in most Champagnes aims to take the finest points of each grape varietal and bring them together to produce spectacular, strong yet balanced results in the bottle.

Region: Champagne

The region of Champagne in the north-easterly part of France has, for hundreds of years, been known for the production of high quality, elegant and characterful sparkling white wines. Champagne wines continue to dominate the market for sparkling wines, and are the envy of many countries, with plenty of producers attempting to emulate their unique practices. The chalky, mineral-rich soils of this high altitude region are ideal for growing the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Petit Meunier varietal grapevines which cover the region and are usually blended together in the production of Champagne wine. The climate of Champagne is far cooler than other famous wine regions in France, but the wineries which are found all over the area have generations of expertise, and have no problems in producing vast quantities of their famous produce for the world market.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.

Good value. Prefer to Billecart NV Rose. Can tell Charles Heidsieck ages this significantly longer than required for NV champagne (3 years)
