91-93 Young and unevolved, the 2021 Cornas Patou is nevertheless promising and has the vintage's fresh, lively style as well as elevated acidity. An attractive and pure style, with lifted floral and potpourri aromas and good freshness to the cherry and wild red berry flavors. Though light on its feet, this has real substance, with iron-edged tannins keeping a firm grip while the intensity builds. Best from 2025 through 2032. 500 cases made, 83 cases imported.

Blueberries, currants, dried herbs, violets and mild spices. Medium body with firm tannins. Structured with a juicy core of cherries and fresh acidity. Crunchy, salivating finish. Drink or hold.
Winery
100% Syrah. Grapes are pressed with an old-style basket press and aged 2 years in 2-7 year-old barrels. Some stems are kept for vinification. "Patou" is the top site south of the village of Cornas with decomposed granite and a rich soil that gives supple tannins and perfumed wines. The oldest vines are 100 years old!

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.
