Multidimensional, showing different flavor nuances with each sip. A distinctive, gorgeous version, featuring aromas and flavors of lemon curd, apple and hazelnut, with hints of spearmint. Intense minerality takes over on the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2024. 500 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Christoph Hoch's biodynamic NV Hollenburger Grüner Veltliner blends the vintages 2018, 2017 and 2016 and opens with a deep and spicy-mineral as well as fresh and aromatic, slightly oxidative sur lie bouquet of ripe fruits intertwined with delicate notes of crushed or weathered stones as well as herbs and dried flowers. Lush and delicate on the palate, this is an intense and elegant yet light to medium-bodied, silky-textured and well-balanced Veltliner with finesse and a seriously structured finish that reveals food-friendly grip and intensity. An excellent wine with a touch of oak on the finish. 11.5% alcohol. Tasted in October 2019.
Winery
From terraced vineyards around Hollenburg with Hollenburger Konglomerat and Loess situated between 250 – 300 meters altitude. 100% fermented and matured in big oak casks. Hoch treats each barrel as an experiment, some of the wine has a maceration on the skins, some goes through malo, some does not. The blend is 40% from the most recent vintage, 40% the previous vintage, and 20% three vintages ago. The youngest vintages gives the wine freshness and vivacity, the middle vintage body, and the last vintage is normally the most tannic and structured. The combination gives the most complete and complex expression of Hollenburg, irrespective of vintage. For those who are curious, the back label always lists a lot number in tiny print and the first two numbers show what the youngest vintage in the blend.

Varietal: Gruner Veltliner

Gruner Veltliner is a pale skinned white wine grape varietal most closely associated with central European countries such as Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In recent years, it has spread somewhat to several New World countries, where it is becoming gradually more popular and regularly seen in wine stores. One of the main attractions of this grape varietal for winemakers is the fact that it is highly versatile, and can be used for the production of several different wine styles, including young, dry white wines, excellent sparkling wines, and it is also a grape varietal which is well suited for aging Gruner Veltliner has the ability to express much of its terroir, and the best examples are generally those which are full of delightfully mineral-rich flavors alongside the more usual notes of citrus fruits and peach.

Country: Austria

Austria is a fascinating country when it comes to wine production, and with a wine culture that stretches back over four thousand years, it is one of the oldest viticultural centers in the world. Today, it is the Grüner Veltliner varietal grape which is the most widely grown and processed, producing elegant dry white wines, and very flavorful and aromatic sweet wines enjoyed to a great extent by local communities, and which are beginning to receive the recognition they deserve by the global wine market. Austria's eastern flatlands benefit from fertile and mineral rich soils, fed by the great river Danube, as well as the long hot summers the country enjoys with low precipitation. Today, over fifty thousand hectares of Austrian land is under vine, and even within the city limits of Vienna, high quality wine is produced and enjoyed.
