Attractive white peaches and apricots and a floral edge, too. This has a very assertively chalky, fresh and crisp texture with some terrific line and length. Has the potential to improve and be even more interesting with age. Drink or hold.

From a half-hectare parcel in Chavanay, the 2018 Condrieu Les Eguets is a tight, crisp rendering of the appellation, flecked with notes of peppery spice and anise. Fermented and aged in 500-liter barrels (20% to 25% new), it's medium to full-bodied but streamlined and linear, with the potential to improve with short-term cellaring.
Winery
Rich golden color. Powerful perfume and heady notes of jasmin flowers mingling with apricot blossom and honeycomb. The texture is highly viscous to the point of being almost oily. Unctuous and full bodied on the palate. Explosion of compote of citrus and apricot fruit quickly followed by some granitic minerality. The acidity balances the experience perfectly. Gorgeous and sensuous wine. Pairs with fish, pasta and poultry in cream sauce; also with veal, pork dishes and creamy cheeses.

green grapes

Varietal: Viognier

The green skinned grapes of the Viognier varietal are a true French classic, and are the only grape varietal allowed to be used in certain fine wines produced in the Rhone region. Their highly aromatic qualities are prized by wineries and wine drinkers alike, and are widely admired for their extremely floral nose which gives an impression of sweetness, despite these wines almost always being very dry. The precise origins of the Viognier grape are lost in time, but today they can still be found growing in many regions of France, as well as in several countries of the New World. Their floral aromas and fruit-forward flavors make them a favorite for those seeking an elegant wine, and despite the grapes being notoriously difficult to grow, vintners persevere with them, as they know the results are rarely less than spectacular.

Region: Rhone Valley

The southern French wine region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers for over two thousand years, with the first grapevines of the region being cultivated in around 600 BCE when the ancient Greeks arrived with their knowledge of viticulture and eagerness to produce more wine. Today, the region is famed around the world for the excellence of its produce, and has dozens of wineries making the most of the wide range of grape varietals which flourish there. In the northern sub-region, the continental climate and brisk winds coming off the Central Massif allow wineries to grow a smaller range of varietals – predominantly Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, whereas the southern, more Mediterranean sub-region allows far more range. Here, dozens of varietals are grown for the production of white, red and rosé wines, all packed full of flavor and able to express the unique terroir they are grown on.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
