Dark and concentrated fruit and wood aromas are intense but not overblown on the nose of this rich bottling. Very firm tannins frame the sip, where dark cherry, mesquite and black-pepper flavors ride a persistent acidity. This will last. Drink now–2039. (Cellar Selection) ... More details

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is spicy and floral in the glass, wafting up with a blend of musky black currants and pine shavings. Silky-smooth and polished in feel, this washes depths of dark red fruits across the palate, leaving a subtle coating of sweet tannins in its wake. The 2019 finishes a bit short yet cleans up nicely, with licorice and spice traces that slowly fade. Not to be confused with the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Margarita Ranch reviewed last year by Josh Raynolds. This is part of what is referred to as the "Pearl Collection".
Winery
The Pearl Cabernet Sauvignon is a blockbuster wine that shows the full potential of Cabernet Sauvignon grown at Margarita Vineyard. Aromas of ripe blackberry, vanilla and graphite show hints of black olive and earthy loam. A plush, mouthfilling texture delivers layered flavors of plum, cranberry, cherry and blueberry. Suggestions of toasted oak, caramel and cola bring added complexity to a firm, structured finish.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Since their conception in 18th century France, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have flourished across the Old and New Worlds and have changed the way we think about red wine forever. Their sharp and astringent nature has a wonderful ability to mellow and round with age, and when helped by being blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc varietals – as is done in Bordeaux and elsewhere – the results can be truly remarkable. What is most special about Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is the fact that they have a true affinity for oak, and when aged in barrels made of this fragrant wood, the wine which comes out of them a few years later holds an amazing array of flavors and aromas, making Cabernet Sauvignon based wines some of the most memorable in the world. Single variety bottles from the New World made from this grape are also increasing in popularity, as the strong flavors and full-bodied nature of these wines is a great match for many global cuisines.

Region: California

It isn't difficult to see how California became one of the world's most important, successful and influential wine regions. Since the first vines were planted in the state by Spanish pioneers in the 18th century, the region has made the most of its ideal climatic conditions, which range from hot, dry and arid to windswept and cool, for vineyard cultivation and wine production. Today, California has almost half a million acres under vine, and hundreds of independent and well established wineries dotted across its vast wine-making areas. Californian wines range from the traditional, and those emulating fine Old World wines, to the experimental and unique, and it is the home to many of the world's most exciting and trailblazing wineries producing excellent bottles for the global market.

Country: United States

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.
