The 2016 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra opens to fleshy floral aromas with lilac and dried lavender that cede to wild berry, cherry and candied orange skin. You don't get much of the tar or asphalt-like tones that you often see with Nebbiolo. Instead, the wine reveals bright primary fruit and delicate, ethereal complexity. The effect is smooth, refined and silky. The Ciabot Mentin vineyard is located within the Ginestra cru and represents the top part of the hill, with fruit planted at 410 meters above sea level. This vineyard was established in 1978. Like the other Clerico Baroli, it ages in both barrique (for eight months) and botte (for one year), and the overall oak imprint is reduced compared to past vintages. ... More details

This is extremely perfumed with dried flowers, dark fruit, black mushrooms and roasted meat. Full-bodied and very powerful with intensely rich tannins that show polish and strength. It’s very long and chewy, yet linear and tight. Needs time to soften, but what potential here! Drink from 2024 and onwards.

A supple, luscious red, packed with cherry, black currant and violet flavors, showing light accents of tar, iron and wild herbs. This is backed by a dense structure, yet remains beautifully integrated, even at this youthful stage. Excellent length. Offers fine purity and harmony overall. Best from 2022 through 2046. 200 cases made, 100 cases imported.

The 2016 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is a bold, generous wine. Expressive balsamic overtones and searing tannins give this brooding Barolo plenty of Ginestra bite. Time in the glass brings out red fruit, blood orange and mint nuances. The 2016 has good aromatic energy but the finish feels a bit compact and smothered by oak.
Winery
Dark in color with beautiful garnet and ruby highlights, with aromas of red fruit, spice, and toasted hazelnut. The palate is well-structured with impressive depth and power

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The dusty purple grapes of the Nebbiolo variety are widely considered to be amongst the finest in the world, and hold many unique characteristics which have secured their place in wine making history. Indeed, almost all of the most respected and sought after red wines of Italy are made using this grape varietal, and it wasn't long before several New World wineries started experimenting with the fruit of this special vine, too. Nebbiolo grapes are renowned for their ability to age beautifully, with their strong and dense tannins mellowing out and becoming more balanced inside the oak. Alongside this, they hold some of the most complex and exciting flavors to be found in any grape, which range from gorgeous notes of black truffle, to aromatic violets and tobacco tones.

Region: Piedmont

n Italy, the region most closely associated with excellent quality red wines and characterful sparkling wines is Piedmont. This alpine region is located in the north-west of the country, and features beautiful foothills of the impressive mountain range which forms the nearby border between Italy, France and Switzerland. Wineries in Piedmont work with the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive in the warm, dry summers and cooler autumns, as well as the beautifully expressive Moscato grapes which are used for the sparkling Asti wines the region is famed for. For generations, these wineries have perfected the art of aging their red wines, and blending grape varietals to get the most out of each one, leading to a region known all over the world for the exceptional quality of its produce.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
