Lovely, clean black fruit character to this full-bodied and densely packed red. Also offers hints of dark chocolate, cardamom and fresh fenugreek seeds. The tannins are well embedded in the texture and pull you down into the wine. The fruit is persistent. The finish is long, turning firm by the end. From organically grown grapes. Cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. This is really impressive now, but will benefit from another couple of years in bottle. So tempting now, though. ... More details

Grattamacco's 2020 Bolgheri Superiore L'Alberello is impressive. Crushed red berry fruit, white pepper, mint, flowers, spice and blood orange all race across the palate, with notable freshness and vibrancy. This deceptively mid-weight Maremma red is beautifully finessed and nuanced from start to finish. I especially admire the energy here. Pretty floral and mineral notes brighten up the finish, with high-toned aromatics that linger.

There's a yin and yang between the lush blackberry, black currant and cherry fruit and the tense, grainy tannins in this red, which starts out fluid, then tightens up as it builds to the long finish. Mineral and underbrush notes add depth. Just feels more youthful than its peers at this stage. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2045.

The Alberello vineyard was picked on 19 September, thus escaping the abundant rainfall that marked the following days. ‘This wine is produced from the first vineyard in Bolgheri trained to bush vines (‘alberello’ in Italian). ‘The vines are fifteen years old and planted at the same distance to share the same light and loam-clay soil portions. Organic farming allows a low and well-balanced production of 1kg of grapes per plant,’ reported Luca Marrone, winemaker of Colle Massari estates. Dark garnet with aromas of blueberry and forest floor, this is very Mediterranean and youthful, with cedar wood and liquorice candy complexity on the finish. Firm and grippy at first, it's extracted and powerful with a concentration of fruit and freshness in a tight-knit matter. A great Bordeaux blend worth waiting for.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, the Grattamacco 2020 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello sees fruit from 15-year-old vines, and everything is harvested on the same day. The wine ages in barrique for 18 months. The bouquet evokes dry aromas of Sicilian oregano, grilled thyme and earthy licorice root. On the palate, you get good length and general complexity with rich tart fruit, cherry and blackberry that can still go the distance. The tannins are powdery and delicate. A candied note closes this very pretty wine. Production is 9,000 bottles.

Its structure is complex and the tannins wonderfully ripe and silky. Notes of blackcurrant, blackberries. Leather and coffee are dominant. Eclectic and full of character on the palate.

Tuscany has been producing fine wines for almost three thousand years, and as such is widely recognized as being one of the key Old World wine regions which have shaped the way we understand and enjoy quality wines throughout history.
