One of the headline wines of Umbria, the 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni gives us an important and complex expression of one of Italy's most stubborn (and tannic) grape varieties. The workmanship behind this wine is precise and technique-based, and of course it's reliant on the best fruit produced in these manicured vineyards. The results show a full-bodied style that is given momentum by ample fruit weight and a 15.5% alcohol content. Blackberry, cherry liqueur and baking chocolate segue to sweet oak and spicey mahogany. An exotic and smoky mix of dusty dried flowers, allspice, sage and dried black cherries emerges from the hauntingly dark 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni. This is densely textural and weighty in feel, yet the balance is on point, as brisk acids maintain momentum, and a saturation of ripe red and black fruits permeate the palate. Balsam, mint, tobacco, dark chocolate and licorice can all be found through the long and utterly dramatic finale, as the 25 Anni finishes structured, yet more approachable than l've come to expect. Arnaldo Caprai did a great job in creating a highly successful wine in 2018; however, don't expect it to take the usual ten years (or more) that this bottling usually does to come around.

A dense, full-bodied red, with notes of cedar and pine on the nose winding through ripe crushed black cherry, plum and currant fruit. Fresh and tightly meshed, with appealing accents of red licorice, eucalyptus and graphite lingering on the firm finish. Best from 2025 through 2033. 750 cases made.

Aromas of black walnut, blackberry and licorice, following through to a full body with chewy tannins and lots of dark, inky fruit. Some walnut and coffee-bean undertones. Needs two or three years to soften. Drink after 2024 or beyond.

Region: Umbria

Umbria in central Italy is one of the country's smallest wine regions, and is often overlooked due to its proximity to Tuscany. However, Umbria specialises in using its stunning Tuscany-esque terroir â€“ all rolling hillsides and lush, green vineyards â€“ to their full potential, and producing stunning wines of character and distinction for extremely reasonable prices. In particular, Umbria is renowned as something of a home of innovative Italian wine making, taking native varietals such as Sangiovese and Grechetto, and blending them with Bordeaux red and white wine grapes in order to produce spectacular aged, blended wines. By taking traditional viticultural practices, and shaking them up a bit, Umbria is quickly discarding its former poor reputation, and proving that it is a wine region to watch and explore.

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
