Wild berry, underbrush, tilled earth, leather and blue flower aromas shape the nose of this fragrant, stunning red. The newest Taurasi addition to the firm's already impressive line up, this is focused, terroir-driven and loaded with finesse. It delivers flavors of juicy wild cherry, crushed rasperry, blood orange, star anise and tobacco, framed in lithe, polished tannins and fresh acidity. While already enjoyable, it will also age well for years. Drink through 2030. (Editors' Choice) ... More details

The 2015 Taurasi Stilema is dark and animal in nature, flaunting its crushed blackberry, tobacco, savory exotic spices, ashen earth and musky herbal tones. It’s unexpectedly cool-toned and precise, with polished black fruits that envelope its burly Aglianico acidity. Notes of licorice and minerals give way to fine tannins, reminding me that this is an incredibly young Taurasi. Piero Mastroberardino seeks with this bottling to recreate a style that he remembers from his childhood, one which favors earth and spice over fruit, and demonstrates a transparency of Aglianico. I must say that it’s quite impressive, as it is quite an achievement to produce such an elegant wine in the 2015 vintage at only 13% abv. Bravo.

Enticing nose of incense-like spice and hints of dried fruit and ashy minerals. Medium-bodied with a silky tannin framework to support the intense bead of fruit. Refined. I would drink this now, but you can hold, too.

I love the shape of the bottles in this line of wines from Mastroberardino. The 2015 Taurasi Stiléma is a balanced and softly textured expression of Aglianico with ripe cherry, tobacco and grilled herb. Despite the warmth of the 2015 vintage, this wine shows some uncharacteristic elements of herb and rosemary that give the wine a more tangy and nervous personality. Try it alongside a spicy puttanesca.

This medium- to full-bodied red is abundantly aromatic, offering bay leaf, orange zest and crushed pink peppercorn accents that are enmeshed with flavors of ripe raspberry and wild strawberry fruit. Defined by a spine of mouthwatering acidity and trim tannins, this is sleek and focused through to the minerally finish. Best from 2022 through 2032. 800 cases made, 75 cases imported.

Color: Soft ruby ??red with delicate reflections, of luminous transparency. Nose: It offers complex aromas, fruity and floral nuances in harmony with spicy nuances. Bouquet with olfactory notes of cherry, plum, blackberry, caramel, tobacco, vanilla, leather and cloves. Taste: On the palate it is fresh, savory, agile, with a silky tannic texture, well balanced with all the other components. Austere and complex, with great drinkability.

green grapes

Varietal: Aglianico

Aglianico grapes have been cultivated in southern Italy for over two thousand years, and were once a very important grape to the ancient Romans, who adored the deep garnet colored wine it produced. Today, Aglianico grapes are grown in many parts of the world, and thrive best in hot, dry climates, and especially on volcanic soils. As such, they do particularly well in certain parts of the United States, where they are regularly used as a blending wine. Aglianico is a thick skinned black grape, and as such has a high tannin content which makes it ideal for aging The aging process mellows the often harsh tannins in the grape juice, making the wine more balanced and free to reveal flavors and aromas of dark fruits, plum and chocolate. It is also a highly acidic wine, and in some parts of the world is given over to noble rot in order to make an intense and slightly viscous sweet dessert wine.

Region: Campania

For over three thousand years now, Campania has been one of Europe's most important and enduring wine regions. A thousand years before the Romans helped spread Italian wines around the known world, Campanian farmers and vintners were experimenting with their vast array of native grape varietals, and producing wines which went down in history due to their quality, their strength of character and their fine aromas and flavors What makes Campania so special? There are, of course, many theories. However, one only has to look at the exceptional volcanic soils, and hot, dry Mediterranean climate of the region in order to begin understanding just why the grapes here grow so well and express so many fine characteristics. This special region has been producing quality wines since time immemorial, and it seems unlikely it will stop doing so any time soon.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
