The prestigious 2006 La Grande Dame is made from 47% Chardonnay and 53% Pinot Noir, and assembles the fruit of eight grand cru villages. Very intense and complex on the nose, this is a full-bodied, round, rich and mouth-filling, but also refined prestige cuvée; it reveals a fascinating purity, precision and freshness. Veuve Clicquot's prestige cuvée is named after the widow Clicquot, the great lady who built up the house in the early 19th century. This latest incarnation is just showing signs of ripe toasty maturity. It is rich and soft with a high dosage, in the house style, with a full panoply of lime, red apple and apricot. Drink now and until 2022.

Developing more into the spicy and savory zone, the fruit is sweetening as it ages, too. Aromas of grapefruit citrus and yellow peach, with some flinty notes, as well as honey and almond nougat. The palate delivers cherry fruit flavors with spiced pastry in a fluid, open-knit and mellow mode. Builds toasty grilled hazelnut flavors into the finish. Drink now.

The last in the sequence of Grandes Dames with a healthy slug of Chardonnay (47% in 2006), this is the child of a capricious and somewhat tricky vintage, the summer marked by an early heatwave but then a rainy August. You may not think so when you taste, as this is a very confident and complex wine, well named indeed, as an inherent feminine charm starts to show its pedigree with a little age. Splashes of almond, quince and beeswax pay their compliments to the structure, discreet vinosity starting to intervene, marked by notes of gingerbread and verbena. Toasty notes and a generous finish give a nod to the warmer months of the season and the result, still engagingly primary, is nonetheless opulent indeed.

To the eye, La Grande Dame 2006 presents a color with bright, golden glints. The initial nose reveals a strong, aerial and delicate attack. Once opened, the wine has notes of dried fruits (almonds, figs, apricots), ripe white fruits (pears) and finishes on subtle toasted notes of hazelnut and praline. These pastry notes create a perfect balance with the freshness and clarity of the blend. The attack in the mouth is strong and clean. La Grande Dame 2006 has a silky texture on young fruits, supported by citrus and notes of red fruits (cherry). The Pinot Noir is extraordinarily distinguished by its freshness, minerality and power. La Grande Dame 2006 is a perfect balance of complexity, structure and power. These characteristics unite to create an elegant balance of freshness and structure, highlighted by a perfect dosage (6 g/l) that resonates with the potential of this vintage.

There are few areas in the world with a reputation quite as famous and respected as that of Champagne in France, and almost every wine region on earth has imitated or has been influenced by the careful process mastered by the wineries of Champagne. However, it is in the grape varietals which thrive in this region where the secrets to the Champagne's success can be found â€“ the acidic, flavorful Chardonnay grapes meeting the characterful Pinot Noir varietal, and coming together to produce something wonderful in the bottle. There are actually seven varietals allowed by French wine law for the production of Champagne wines, all of which are used by wineries to accentuate each others finest points and maintain the reputation of this very special region, the home to some extremely high quality grapes.

The region of Champagne in the north-easterly part of France has, for hundreds of years, been known for the production of high quality, elegant and characterful sparkling white wines. Champagne wines continue to dominate the market for sparkling wines, and are the envy of many countries, with plenty of producers attempting to emulate their unique practices. The chalky, mineral-rich soils of this high altitude region are ideal for growing the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Petit Meunier varietal grapevines which cover the region and are usually blended together in the production of Champagne wine. The climate of Champagne is far cooler than other famous wine regions in France, but the wineries which are found all over the area have generations of expertise, and have no problems in producing vast quantities of their famous produce for the world market.
