Fleshy fruit on the attack surrounded by clear spice notes, black pepper, saffron and cinnamon, slightly drying on the finish. You can begin to drink this, although it will age comfortably for another decade. The terroir with its limestone austerity and juice is becoming clearer at 10 years old than when this wine was young. Drinking Window 2021 – 2034.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Spice and dried fruit with blackberry. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a fresh finish. Delicious. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast

Barrel sample. This wine is ripe and juicy, with full, soft tannins, jammy fruit and sweet plum flavors. It shows the acidity of the year with final notes of tobacco and smoke.

WS 90pts

Wine Spectator

Shows a lightly briary edge, with good focus to the damson plum, currant and blackberry fruit, pierced by singed mesquite and tobacco notes and backed by a lightly chalky thread. Best from 2015 through 2021.

Vinous Media

Inky-purple. Spicy, chocolatey aromas of cassis and plum. Enters chocolatey and sweet, then turns more austere and unyielding, though with bright flavors of blackberry and dark cherry throughout. The mounting tannins leave the palate a bit astringent, but the finish is long and juicy. This property, previously known as Chateau Tertre-Daugay, was bought by Haut-Brion's owners in late June of 2011.
