There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

93-94+ 2023 Bourgneuf has a deep and intense, crunchy nose of mature, cassis filled fruit. The taste is elegant and powerful at the same time, with a fine layer of crunchy mature, sweet fruit and an impressive, intense underlying backbone of cassis. Well integrated tannins. This is an impressive wine that should provide excellent drinking when mature. Save it for 5-7 years. Bourgneuf has been on a ride in recent years and the wines keep getting better and better but are still offered at a fair price.

The 2023 Bourgneuf is elegant and finessed, as it always is. Blood orange, pomegranate, sweet spice, mint and rose petal are all finely knit. Aeration brings out the wine's textural richness and resonance. This is beautifully done. Even so, the 2023 can lean into a richer style that I find less attractive than some of the more svelte wines of some prior vintages.

A classy 2023 Pomerol, the 2023 Château Bourgneuf offers ripe black cherries, melted chocolate, smoke, and roasted herbs on the nose. Based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and aged 12 months in 35% new French oak, it's medium-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with solid tannins, a nicely balanced, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15 years or so. Drink 2028-2043.
