The 2017 Madrona Ranch is such a gorgeous wine. Bright and energetic, the 2017 possesses wonderful vibrancy that gives it striking energy. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and rose petal are some of the many aromas and flavors that open effortlessly. The purity of the 2017 is unreal. Readers will find a wine that deftly balances the richness of the year with a good deal of vibrancy and energy. Like all of these wines, the 2017 Madrona should drink well with (relatively) minimal cellaring. ... More details

Fabulous aromas of sweet tobacco, flowers, wet earth and blackberries. Black olives, too. Full body and chewy yet polished tannins. Dusty texture. Extremely flavorful. Tight and polished. A sophisticated, intriguing wine. Drink in 2022.

Lots of cassis and redcurrant-like fruits emerge from the 2017 Madrona Ranch, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It shines for its elegance, is medium to full-bodied, has wonderful tannins, and reveals complex notes of flowers, truffle, and forest floor. This beautiful, classic 2017 has the charm and elegance to drink well today, yet the density and structure to evolve for 25 years or more.

This would be a stunner in any vintage, but especially in 2017, as it's completely filled in, offering head-turning waves of steeped plum, black Mission fig and black currant fruit that just won't quit. But this is not flamboyant, just rock-solid and steady, with an underscoring of loam and alder that works like a metronome, keeping a steady beat while supporting the fruit, accented by espresso crema, bay leaf and tar notes on the extremely long finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2040. 352 cases made.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

From the valleys of California and Chile to the rolling hillsides of the Bordeaux region of France, the one red wine grape varietal you will find in abundance is the Cabernet Sauvignon. This darkly colored grape has been cultivated since the mid 18th century, when it was borne from a cross of fine Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc varietals. Since then, it has spread around the world and has been received with pleasure by wineries looking for a varietal which delivers excellence of flavor and aroma, whilst being hardy enough to resist frost and rot and other such difficulties. Indeed, Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most recognizable red wine grape varietal on earth, and is easily distinguished by its high tannin level and acidic nature, which is often so beautifully mellowed by being blended with Merlot and other such grapes.

Region: California

It isn't difficult to see how California became one of the world's most important, successful and influential wine regions. Since the first vines were planted in the state by Spanish pioneers in the 18th century, the region has made the most of its ideal climatic conditions, which range from hot, dry and arid to windswept and cool, for vineyard cultivation and wine production. Today, California has almost half a million acres under vine, and hundreds of independent and well established wineries dotted across its vast wine-making areas. Californian wines range from the traditional, and those emulating fine Old World wines, to the experimental and unique, and it is the home to many of the world's most exciting and trailblazing wineries producing excellent bottles for the global market.

Country: United States

For three hundred years now, the United States has been leading the New World in wine production, both in regards to quantity and quality. Wine is actually produced in all fifty states across the country, with California leading the way by an enormous margin. Indeed, as much as eighty-nine percent of all wines to come out of the United States are produced in California, where the fertile soils and sloping mountain sides, coupled with the long, hot summers provide ideal conditions for producing high quality, European style red, white and rosé wines. With over a million acres of the country under vine, the United States sits comfortably as the fourth largest wine producer in the world, where imported grape varietals from all over the Old World are processed using a successful blend of traditional and contemporary techniques.

Appellation: Napa Valley

California has long been recognized as a wonderfully rich and fertile location for viticulture, and hundreds of years now, vintners in the United States of America have used the valleys and mountain sides of California for gradually building their own wine culture, based on techniques and practices brought over from the old countries. When it comes to Californian wines of real quality and distinction, however, there is nowhere quite like the Napa Valley, which is now widely considered to be one of the world's premier wine regions, and very much the standard bearer for modern, American wines. With Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Zinfandel varietal grapes all growing well in Napa Valley, the region produces an impressive range of wines, which have had an enormous impact on the Old and New Worlds, and have changed viticulture forever.
