"Alma de Mar" is one of Xurxo's top wines, and comes from a single plot of 100% Albariño very close to the sea. The grapes are grown organically, harvest is done manually, it is pressed directly and then goes through spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with yeasts natives of the vineyard itself. Once the alcoholic fermentation ends, it goes through bâtonnage for 8 months, then it is racked to remove from the lees and after 3 or 4 months it is bottled. No fining, only a slight filtration and minimal use of SO2. Stunning minerality and length with this one. Clean, bright, and magical!

Varietal: Albarino

Whilst the pale skinned grapes of the Albarino varietal can now be found in many countries around the world, it has its origins in Spain, where it is still grown in huge numbers today and used to produce excellent quality white wines typical of that part of Europe. Said to be a clone of the French Savagnin grape, Albarino thrives in humid, hot climates and is revered for its light body, high levels of acidity and superb flavors Most commonly, Abarino varietal grapes are famed for their aromatic qualities, and hold notes of bright, soft summer fruits such as apricots and peaches. The wines made from this varietal are pleasantly acidic, light in body and have a tart, sharp bitterness which is excellent alongside many Spanish foods.

The northern Spanish wine region of Galicia is a fascinating one indeed, and is most definitely a wine region to keep your eye on today and in the near future. Once an important center of viticulture and wine trade, Galicia suffered from a huge and devastating economic depression in the 19th century, leaving many of the vineyards untended and useless. However, the 20th century saw various organizations pour money into Galician wine making, thus rebooting the wine industry of this relative wet and windy region on the Atlantic coast. Today, the region is being celebrated for its superb and flavorful blended white wines, made from native grape varietals such as Albarino and Caino Blanca, and is continuing to rebuild itself and regain former glories.
