Here, fruit from Beaumont's oldest vines - more than 40 years old - are barrel fermented and lees-stirred over 10 months to give great texture, weight and integrated oak spice, balanced by brisk acidity. Fresh fynbos, Asian pear, ginger root, green melon and fig tones form the nose of this lovely wine, with pretty honeysuckle, orange blossom and beeswax accents all dancing in the background. The medium-weight palate boasts some opulence and roundness in the ripe, sweet citrus, melon and fig tones, but it's masterfully balanced by superbly bright and laser-focused acidity. Balanced and harmonious, with a long finish, this is delicious now, but shows some serious long-term potential. Drink now–2028. Editors' Choice.

The 2017 Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc was fermented and matured in oak, 15% new. It offers attractive orange peel, dried honey and white chocolate scents that open with aeration, and the prudent use of oak is welcome. The palate is well balanced with fine weight; touches of orange pith and nectarine lace together toward the quite refined and persistent finish. This is a classy Chenin Blanc.

The 2017 Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc is an interesting wine. It has a classic acid line through the center of the palate like the rest of the Chenin Blanc in the range, but the expression is fuller on the nose and palate. This has a bright citrus core with weighty tropical fruit tones of fresh pineapple blossoms that fill the nose and flood the palate. There is also precision and mineral tension on its broad mid-palate. The grapes had to have been harvested at an earlier date to retain the classic Chenin Blanc identity. It has a structured balance with a long finish. This is a really enjoyable wine. I'm just now thinking about this wine with fresh seafood, and it is making me hungry and thirsty. 16,800 bottles were made.

The dried fruits come through clearly with sliced pineapples and pears. Full-bodied, layered and flavorful. A delicious finish. Drink now.

Varietal: Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is widely recognized as being one of the finest and most versatile white wine grape varietals in the world. In their native home of France's Loire Valley, wineries have used this varietal for centuries to produce a wide range of excellent wines, made possible by the fact that the high acidity in the grapes allows vintners to produce everything from dry, still varieties, to sparkling crÃ©mants and sweet dessert wines. One of the key features of this grape, and one which has won it many admirers, is the fact that the transparency of the varietal allows it to express the finer features of the terroir it is grown on, and also allows it to demonstrate the skill of the winemaker in the bottle. These grapes are a hardy varietal, growing well in moderate climates and in heavy clay-like soils all over the wine producing world.
