From lieu-dit Maison Rouge in Tupin et Semons, the 60-year-old vines are grown on gneiss. The 20% whole-bunch fruit spends 20 months in barriques, 40% new. It has a touch of rosemary and ginger to the raspberry and blackberry fruit, and the medium-bodied palate is very fresh, with good concentration and no over-extraction, leading to a long finish. A lovely sense of balance and finesse, with some backbone. Drinking Window: 2021 - 2027

This sports a dark plum and blackberry fruit profile, with racy edges and notes of bay leaf, sweet tapenade, anise and iron. Displays range, cut and energy. Should age nicely. Best from 2022 through 2032. 400 cases made, 25 cases imported.

The nose takes a savory stance with ripe dark cherries and berries, framed in graphite, tar and pepper with attractively fragrant spices, too. The palate has a very compact and sleek array of fine but firm tannins, bathed in dark plums. Drink or hold.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.

Region: Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Country: France

It is widely understood and accepted that the finest wines in the world come out of France. Whether you are drinking a vintage bottle from one of the famed Grand Cru wineries of Bordeaux - such as Chateau Margaux or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - or a more simple and affordable bottle from one of the lesser known appellations in Burgundy, the likelihood is that the wine is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, and has a fine, balanced structure typical of almost all French produce. This reputation for excellence is taken extremely serious by the French, with dozens of regularly updated laws and regulations ensuring the quality and accurate labeling of wines. Such dedication and passion for fine wine, representative of the region in which it is produced, means customers can be assured that when they buy a bottle from France, they are buying something almost certain to please and delight.
