Plenty of dried-orange and berry character with hints of chocolate and coffee. Medium to full body with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Chewy at the end. Needs time to open and soften. Try after 2024.

Representing about 4,900 bottles to be releases in the fall, the 2017 Barolo Cerequio is tempered and mild, growing in intensity as the wine takes on more oxygen in the glass. The fruit is supple and nicely shaped, both by the heat of the vintage and the careful use of oak for the refinement and aging. This is an open and accessible wine from one of the most celebrated sites in the Barolo appellation.

This opens with aromas of forest floor, menthol and French oak. The palate is rather austere, offering cranberry, vanilla, coconut and coffee bean alongside tight, fine-grained tannins that leave a drying finish.

A clear bright ruby color with very light garnet red reflections; intense and persistent aroma of red fruit with notes of plum and cherry. A pleasant aroma of wood is noticeable after the fruity aroma, anticipating the full taste of a great wine suitable for long lasting life. A succulent, rich, full-bodied and pleasant taste emerges after the woody one, with the presence of slightly ripe red fruit.

However, the historic wineries which typify this region use a relatively wide variety of grapes, including Dolcetto and Barbera for their red wines, which are typically aged and have a delightful velvety character. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. The region benefits from a range of terroirs which are often well expressed in the sparkling wines, and a wonderfully consistent climate ideal for vineyard cultivation.
