I think the pure Monastrell from an ungrafted vineyard has to be among the best in its kind in the world, and the 2018 Pie Franco didn't disappoint me. It fermented with 25% to 30% full clusters (less full clusters were used in this continental and cooler vintage) and indigenous yeasts in underground pools with a moderate maceration at a maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius. It matured in 500-liter oak barrels for 16 months. The challenge here is to control the power and natural concentration of the old, south-facing vines, and a year like 2018, even if it presented some challenges and made them work harder in the vineyards, provides good conditions to do so. ... It’s often the case that a grape variety improves with a blending partner. At Casa Castillo, there is absolutely no need. José María Vicente’s years paying such close attention to his vineyards produces exceptional wines. He expresses the very best of Monastrell, and no better than with his vines that have so far resisted phylloxera. Fermented in stone lagars, and aged in 500L foudres, the wine is dark, with notes of black olives, wild thyme and black fruits. Organic. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2031

green grapes

Varietal: Mourvedre

In many parts of the world, from Washington State to France, Australia to Spain, wineries have been working with the Mourvèdre varietal grape to achieve fantastic and fascinating results. The grape varietal is actually a relatively ancient one, believed to have been brought to Spain from Asia Minor over two thousand years ago. The Mourvèdre grape is generally considered to be a difficult one to cultivate, as it requires both heat, light and moisture, meaning wineries wishing to grow Mourvèdre need to be well irrigated, but in hot regions where the vines will be safe from rot. The grapes hold lots of unusual and interesting flavors, ranging from meaty and gamey, to brambly and full of dark fruit notes. As such, the wines they produce can be matched with lots of different foods, making them popular around the world.

Country: Spain

For over two thousand years, Spain has been responsible for much of Europe's wine production, making the very best of native grape varietals, and more recently experimenting with and perfecting wines made from imported grapes. Of course, the region of La Rioja is renowned world-wide for the quality and characteristics of its wines, which benefit greatly from the warm, dry continental climate of the area, and the fertile soils of the Ebro river basin. However, there is far more to Spanish produce than the complex, aromatic and earthy red wine of this region, as a result of the vast range of wine making traditions and practices, and terrains and climatic conditions found across the country. The region Castilla y Leon produces some of Europe's finest white wines, and the sparkling wines of Cava and the sherries of Jerez are firm favorites for wine lovers around the world.
