The Cerbaia 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is silky and polished. There are small berry nuances on the bouquet with background notes of spice, tar and dried rose. These fragrant layers are delicate, light and softly intermingled. There is more power in terms of mouthfeel; however, and both the tannic impact of the wine and its freshness leave a lasting mark. That hot 2017 vintage punch definitely comes through at the end, so I recommend giving this bottle ample time to age and soften. Production is 10,000 bottles. ... More details

A firm and chewy wine with cherry and sandalwood character as well as hints of praline. It’s full-bodied and solid with attractive tannins that give the wine form and tension. Try after 2023.

Varietal: Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively – full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness.
