The 2016 Barbaresco Asili (with 4,000 bottles made) is the most articulate and complete of the Barbaresco wines presented by Ceretto from the 2016 vintage. The wine offers momentary sweetness, with cherry and redcurrant followed by extremely silky and fine texture. After that bright berry fruit, the bouquet lays out dry notes of crushed stone and minerals. I most enjoyed the extremely fine texture of this wine, along with its accessible and elegant approach. Serve it with delicate crackers and a liver pâté or terrine.

Ceretto's 2016 Barbaresco Asili is another stunningly beautiful wine from Ceretto. Here, too, the wine's energy and tension are simply dazzling. Bright red cherry fruit and floral overtones abound in this taut, crystalline Barbaresco. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, but it is a jewel of a wine. Deceptively in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 packs a serious punch and really sizzles with vibrancy.

The aromas of cherries and strawberries are bright and vivid. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a solid finish. Very subtle and refined with gorgeous finesse. Hard not to drink now, but better in 2021.

A beam of cherry and kirsch is supported by a backbone of assertive tannins in this elegant red. Vibrant and open, showing nice overall equilibrium. Needs a year or two to integrate the tannins. Best from 2023 through 2042. 333 cases made, 12 cases imported.

Forest floor, rose, iris, woodland berry, new leather and camphor aromas are front and center. The lean, liner palate is still youthfully austere, offering sour cherry, roasted coffee bean, star anise and botanical herbs set against vibrant acidity and assertive, close-grained tannins. Drink 2023–2030.

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
