This marries black currant and blackberry reduction flavors with a sleek iron structure and a backdrop of warm earth, espresso and tar. Grippy and tight, but with serious coiled-up energy and a late flurry of violet, bay leaf and savory elements. For the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2036. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 600 cases made.

From an inky-dark color to intense black-fruit aromas to mouth-coating blueberry and dark chocolate flavors, this concentrated and polished wine is a showstopper. Layers of soft, fine-grained tannins support the deep, dried-fruit flavors and generous, cocoa-laced oak accents. Best from 2025-2032.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Family Reserve offers up a compelling mélange of blackberry jam, gravel, cured meats, incense, sweet oak, licorice and cloves. This brooding Howell Mountain Cabernet is going to need a number of years to come into its own.

Similarly deep purple-colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve has lots of darker blue, almost black fruits as well as some iron, tapenade, and darker chocolate nuances, with an attractive, herbal edge. Nicely textured, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated, it's another incredibly attractive Cabernet Sauvignon from this team.
Winery
This wine shows vanilla, blackberry, roasted Anaheim chili, mineral and cured black olive on the nose. The wine is full-bodied with flavors of plum and horehound, with a touch of flint and firm tannins on a long, viscous finish.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

There is little doubt about the fact that the most familiar red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, seen listed on bottles from more or less every single wine producing country across the globe. Part of the reason for this is the fact that Cabernet Sauvignon is a particularly hardy grape, resistant to both frost and rot, and can grow well in a number of climatic conditions so long as it receives enough sunlight and water. Of course, this is only half the story – we cannot ignore the fact that wines made from the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal are prized not only for their strong acidic fruit flavors, spicy and earthy notes and high tannin content, but also for the fact that they age beautifully in oak, resulting in wines which are on another level from those made from lesser grapes. Aged wines made using primarily Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are widely recognized to be the finest in the world. The aging process rounds out the tannins, softens the acidity and allows a wide range of fascinating and complex flavors and aromas to come through, making them an unquestioned highlight of the red wine world.

When it comes to New World wine regions, it is widely agreed that many of the finest wines are grown and produced in California.
