This first scents are floral in character, accompanied by a touch of blackcurrant and raspberry, but aeration reveals graphite and slightly smoky notes. The palate is perfectly balanced and expresses clearly the potential of this estate. The 2018 de Millery is a racy thoroughbred that will go the distance without effort, a telltale sign being its chalk-infused yet airborne finish. Should age well for 20 to 25 years. Drinking Window 2025 - 2035. ... More details

Made with consulting advice from the up-and-coming Thomas Duclos (the vineyards are managed by the team at Figeac), the 2018 Château de Millery appears to be a thrilling Saint-Émilion based on 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that’s still resting in 80% new barrels. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied, plump, rounded 2018 that has perfumed notes of wild strawberries, blueberries, blood orange, and violets. It’s exotic, pure, and seamless, and unquestionably a beautiful wine.

From Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, the 2018 de Millery is made up of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It is maturing in 80% new and 20% two-year-old barrels for a projected 16 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up bright, expressive notes of Morello cherries, black raspberries and crushed black plums with touches of smoked meats, fried herbs and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, it has a soft texture and bags of juicy fruit, finishing on a lingering savory note.

The 2018 Château de Millery, owned by the de Manoncourt family, is very refined and pure on a nose that gradually unfurls to offer alluring scents of black cherries, raspberry coulis, orange blossom and mulberry. It gains intensity with aeration but maintains its elegance and poise. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, beautiful balance and a slightly granular texture toward the finish. It feels more consanguineous with Figeac than the Petit Figeac tasted alongside! So perhaps for those who can ill afford that pricier wine, de Millery is the place to come.
Wine Spectator
A delightfully pure, fresh style, with violet, plum and cassis notes allied to a silky frame, backed by a light mineral echo on the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2024. 375 cases made.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France consistently enjoys the reputation of being the finest region for wine making in the world. But what is it that makes this area around the Gironde river so special? The secret lies in their ancient and careful blend of no more than six high quality, flavorful and unique grape varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere are all permitted for usage in the production of Bordeaux wines, and the winery carefully considers how to balance the fine points of one varietal against another. Most commonly, Cabernet Sauvignon is used as the main grape varietal, usually with vintners making wines containing upwards of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon grape juices. This varietal lends its big, spicy, fruity flavors and astringent, tannin-heavy character to the mix. Normally, this strong varietal is then tempered and rounded by Merlot, a fleshy, fruity and far lighter bodied grape, containing far fewer tannins and a much brighter flavor The blended wines are normally left to age in oak, where they can continue to work together and produce their wonderful results.

Region: Bordeaux

The wineries of Bordeaux in France are widely considered to be amongst the finest on earth, with many of the chateaux found on the Left Bank and in the Médoc region routinely demanding enormous prices and being snapped up by collectors looking to add the best examples of the world's white and red wines to their cellars. Bordeaux's secret to success comes from the fact that the terroir of the region is exceptionally rich in minerals, helped by the clay and gravel soils which typify the area and the Gironde river which runs through it. Normally humid in climate, the nearby Atlantic coast supplies cooling breezes, making Bordeaux a winemaker's dream and resulting in extremely high quality grape varietals. For hundreds of years, the wineries of Bordeaux have been mastering the art of wine blending, and today produce a wide range of wine styles using many of the sixteen grape varietals permitted to grow in the region by French law.
