Denis Lurton is in charge at this 37ha Margaux estate, and he has produced a classy, cedar-scented 2016 that has a beautiful vibrancy to it. It is a fairly dramatic take on the year, with full extraction of damson fruit and chewy tannins. Drinking Window: 2027 - 2040

88-90 The 2016 Desmirail is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. It does not possess the most complex Margaux nose, although the purity deserves a commendation with blueberry and cassis fruit. The palate has quite a rich and showy opening though fortunately it does not go over the top. There is a slight metallic edge towards the finish, which I hope will disappear by the time of bottling. It just feels a little pinched at the moment, so there is room for improvement here.

The 2016 Desmirail shows much better now than a couple of months ago: crisp and focused, offering light, tertiary and graphite-tinged black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and a fine thread of acidity, but just a little compact and austere on the finish at the moment. Give this Margaux five or six years in bottle.

This shows steeped plum and blackberry fruit flavors inlaid nicely with juniper and alder notes. There's a velvety edge to the finish, which flows nicely as it pulls the fruit and toast together before showing a flicker of warm earth at the very end. Best from 2021 through 2030. 6,667 cases made.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France consistently enjoys the reputation of being the finest region for wine making in the world. But what is it that makes this area around the Gironde river so special? The secret lies in their ancient and careful blend of no more than six high quality, flavorful and unique grape varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere are all permitted for usage in the production of Bordeaux wines, and the winery carefully considers how to balance the fine points of one varietal against another. Most commonly, Cabernet Sauvignon is used as the main grape varietal, usually with vintners making wines containing upwards of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon grape juices. This varietal lends its big, spicy, fruity flavors and astringent, tannin-heavy character to the mix. Normally, this strong varietal is then tempered and rounded by Merlot, a fleshy, fruity and far lighter bodied grape, containing far fewer tannins and a much brighter flavor The blended wines are normally left to age in oak, where they can continue to work together and produce their wonderful results.
