The 2017 Durfort-Vivens is fabulous, not to mention one of the under the radar gems of the year. Rich and explosive in feel, the 2017 possesses tremendous intensity in every direction. Sweet floral notes, cedar, mint and spice add shades of nuance as this potent, vertically built Margaux opens up in the glass. In 2017, severe frost took with it 35% of the production. The fruit that survived produced an epic, marvelously rich Durfort-Vivens. Don't miss it. ... More details

Barrel Sample. Firmly tannic, but also rich in ripe black-fruit tones, this is going to be a fine wine as it develops. The pure berry flavors shine through the structure and acidity. Drink from 2024.

Rated 95 by James Suckling
Aromas of redcurrants, flowers and cedar with an air of freshness. This has a very impressively composed and structured impression with attractive, raw appeal to the tannins and a core of mainly red-berry flavors. The acidity is vibrant. Very fresh and sustained flavors at the finish. Crushed cement and stone. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try from 2023.

This is packed with black fruits, concentrated and hard to argue with. Great spice and coffee layers, tons of texture that builds to power and concentration, and you feel the tannins as a physical presence. Give it another five years, although doesn't need the full 10. Inky, really impressive, particularly for the vintage.10% aged in amphoras, 70% new oak, the rest one year in barrel.

Charming and stylish, showing bright floral lift throughout while red currant and raspberry fruit, along with mineral and rooibos tea notes, glide through the silky finish. Score Range: 89-92.
Winery
This is the second label, from younger vines, and this wine comes from the fantastic 2017 vintage. It is full of licorice, dark chocolate and blackberry, all wrapped in an elegant and smooth package.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux method of blending quality grape varietals is something which has long been imitated and envied around the world. Whilst there are six Bordeaux grape varietals allowed for the production of red wine in this region of France – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere – the most common and widely used combination involves a careful blend of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, usually with a small percentage of Petit Verdot to boost the overall flavor and balance things out. This process accentuates the finer points of all these varietals, and takes the astringency of one type whilst rounding it out and mellowing it with the light tannins and fleshiness of another. The results are rarely short of spectacular, and are perfect for oak aging, where the flavorful magic of Bordeaux wine making can really take place, and the complex aromas and characteristics can truly come forward.

Region: Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France is possibly the most famous and widely respected wine region in the world. Known primarily for its exceptional blended red wines, made most commonly with Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grape varietals, it also produces superb dry white wines (both blended and single variety), alongside the highly esteemed sweet wines of Sauternes. All of these wine types use a careful mix of traditional wine-making methods alongside modern techniques, as well as more experimental and unorthodox practices such as turning their grapes over to the noble rot which intensifies the flavors in the sweet wines. Bordeaux benefits greatly from its position amongst wide river basins, and the cooling Atlantic breezes which blow across the rolling vineyards which cover this region.

Country: France

It is widely understood and accepted that the finest wines in the world come out of France. Whether you are drinking a vintage bottle from one of the famed Grand Cru wineries of Bordeaux - such as Chateau Margaux or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - or a more simple and affordable bottle from one of the lesser known appellations in Burgundy, the likelihood is that the wine is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, and has a fine, balanced structure typical of almost all French produce. This reputation for excellence is taken extremely serious by the French, with dozens of regularly updated laws and regulations ensuring the quality and accurate labeling of wines. Such dedication and passion for fine wine, representative of the region in which it is produced, means customers can be assured that when they buy a bottle from France, they are buying something almost certain to please and delight.

Appellation: Margaux

There are few appellations in the world quite as famous or with a high reputation so enduring as that of Margaux. This relatively small sub-region of France's Bordeaux has consistently produced many of the planet's finest red wines for centuries, and the chateaus which run all along the banks of the Gironde river have no intention of letting their reputation drop. Indeed, the red Bordeaux grapes which thrive in the gravelly vineyards of Margaux are generally considered amongst the best in the world for flavor, aroma and overall character, and great care is taken by traditional wine-makers in the region to ensure such features make it to the bottle. Overall, Margaux is a center of excellence in viticulture which has become the envy of the wine making world, and long may it continue.
