Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Faugeres comes sashaying out of the glass with pretty kirsch, Black Forest cake and chocolate box scents followed by hints of rosehip tea, fallen leaves and cloves. Medium-bodied, the palate has a velvety texture and bags of perfumed fruit, finishing long and fragrant. The wine was aged in 50% new and 50% second fill French oak barrels for 15 months. The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A pleasure-bent Saint-Emilion based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Chateau Faugeres boasts a healthy ruby color as well as ripe, sexy notes of blackberries, red currants, flowery incense, and spice. While this cuvee is usually a powerhouse, it’s more refined and elegant in 2017 and has medium to full-bodied richness, a light, graceful texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s always a good value and delivers the goods, and the 2017 is no exception.

Barrel Sample. Ripe and juicy, this wine is going to develop quickly. It has plenty of attractive fruitiness and is lightly spiced, with a crisp, fruity aftertaste. Drink from 2022.

This is built on well-buried chalky minerality that gives the core of plum and raspberry fruit a noticeable spine. Tobacco, sanguine and savory streaks fill in through the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2032. 3,833 cases made.

Faugères is never afraid to gloss up, and here it works well - imparting a sexy burnished black fruit edge to the wine, with firm tannins and a juicy freshness running through it. Estate typicity that marries well with the conditions of the year- and in this cooler sector of St-Émilion that must have taken skilled winemaking.

The 2017 Faugères matured in 50% new oak for 15 months. Tasted on two occasions. The first example comes across a little smudged on the nose and soft on the palate, but the second, three months later, evinces more delineation and focus with scents of blackberry, blueberry and crushed stone aromas. The palate has certainly firmed up and gained more backbone, with gentle grip and a touch of graphite and truffle on the finish. Cellar this for several years if you can because I believe it will continue to improve.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

Bordeaux red wines are widely regarded as being the finest red wines produced anywhere in the world, regularly topping awards lists and generally being amongst the most sought after and collectable bottles available. The secret to their success and their particularly memorable and refined characteristics is the fact that Bordeaux red wines are made from a blend of grape varietals, most commonly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, helped by a touch of Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc. The other two key Bordeaux grape varietals which are also used in the blend of many of these excellent wines are Malbec and Carménere, although it is becoming less common to see these in use today. The art of blending primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varietals is something which has been much imitated around the world, as it produces a wonderfully balanced, rounded yet massively complex and flavorful wine, ideal for oak aging The acid and tannin levels in each of these grape varietals is balanced and tempered by the blend, and generations of expertise has gone into the careful selection and cultivation of such quality grapes.

Region: Bordeaux

The wineries of Bordeaux in France are widely considered to be amongst the finest on earth, with many of the chateaux found on the Left Bank and in the Médoc region routinely demanding enormous prices and being snapped up by collectors looking to add the best examples of the world's white and red wines to their cellars. Bordeaux's secret to success comes from the fact that the terroir of the region is exceptionally rich in minerals, helped by the clay and gravel soils which typify the area and the Gironde river which runs through it. Normally humid in climate, the nearby Atlantic coast supplies cooling breezes, making Bordeaux a winemaker's dream and resulting in extremely high quality grape varietals. For hundreds of years, the wineries of Bordeaux have been mastering the art of wine blending, and today produce a wide range of wine styles using many of the sixteen grape varietals permitted to grow in the region by French law.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
