Clearly deeper and richer than the 2013, and in fact as it opens up in the glass you see just how Fonplégade has started to get into its stride at this point, full flowing in energy and depth. Gourmet but with clear pulses of minerality. This has St Emilion character in that you feel the glamour and the contemporary appeal, but is also packed full of bright brambly fruit and has a real sense of energy. Fresh and mouth-watering on the finish - not a lot to complain about. 60% new oak, 25% one year and the rest in cement eggs. Dark-berry and oyster-shell aromas follow through to a medium body, integrated tannins and a tangy finish. An almost burnt lemon undertone. Linear and polished. Very solid. Drink in 2019.

The 2014 Fonplegade has an almost opaque bouquet that demanded continuous swirling of the glass before it reluctantly offered blackberry, raspberry and cedar wood aromas, just a touch of fireside hearth in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, the acidity finely tuned with a voluminous and vigorous finish of redcurrant jam, raspberry and black pepper. There is a lot going on in this Fonplegade and the persistence suggests that it will age over a decade or more.

This has a succulent core of steeped plum and blackberry notes inlaid with ganache and licorice snap accents, all of which knit well through the finish, where a light chalk hint echoes, adding effective contrast. Offers a lingering mouthwatering feeling. This could be sneakily long in the cellar. Drink now through 2020. 3,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.

The 2014 Fonplégade has a dense blackberry and briary scented bouquet with a touch of tobacco coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannin, hints of blue fruit filtering through the black but there is just a touch of greenness that nags away on the finish. I suspect that will dissipate with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Barrel Sample. This is a juicy wine that has attractive fruitiness as well as a dry structure. The palate oscillates between fruit and tannin without one dominating the other.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The blended red wines of Bordeaux have gone down in history as the finest wines every produced, with collectors and many of the general public still eagerly anticipating the wineries of this region's new releases to this day. The secret to Bordeaux's monumental success has been their careful blending of high quality grape varietals, controlled and protected by French law. In Bordeaux, wineries can only produce red wines using a blend of two or more of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec or Carménere grape varietals, with the latter two becoming less and less commonly seen on bottles. The vast majority of Bordeaux red wines use Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varietals, boosted by a little Petit Verdot. These three grapes compliment each other beautifully as they age in oak, rounded out their tannins and the high astringency of the Sauvignon, and resulting in wonderfully complex flavors and aromas.
