Composed of 75% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Grand Corbin-Despagne has a deep garnet-purple color and flamboyant scents of stewed black and red cherries, mulberries and sassafras with an undercurrent of wild blueberries, potpourri and ground cloves, plus a waft of vanilla pod. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with black and blue fruit preserves, supported by firm, ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

The 2018 Grand Corbin-Despagne is bold and racy right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice, expresso and menthol flesh out in this decidedly ample, flamboyant wine.

A dense, layered red with plum, berry, cherry and walnut character. Some bark, too. It’s full and chewy with some earth and currant flavors at the end. The wood shows now, but it will come together nicely. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2024.

Lots of red and black fruits, toasted spiced, dried flowers, and baking chocolate notes emerge from the 2018 Château Grand Corbin-Despagne, a full-bodied, ripe, heady, opulent Saint-Emilion with sweet tannins and a great finish. It packs a punch and will be prized by those who like big fruit and texture. A blend of 75% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, it should keep for 10-15 years.

This red shows a solid core of cassis and raspberry compote flavors, flanked by a strident singed apple wood note. Good energy through the anise and bramble-accented finish though, so this should unwind with some brief cellaring. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2027. 7,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The blended red wines of Bordeaux have gone down in history as the finest wines every produced, with collectors and many of the general public still eagerly anticipating the wineries of this region's new releases to this day. The secret to Bordeaux's monumental success has been their careful blending of high quality grape varietals, controlled and protected by French law. In Bordeaux, wineries can only produce red wines using a blend of two or more of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec or Carménere grape varietals, with the latter two becoming less and less commonly seen on bottles. The vast majority of Bordeaux red wines use Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varietals, boosted by a little Petit Verdot. These three grapes compliment each other beautifully as they age in oak, rounded out their tannins and the high astringency of the Sauvignon, and resulting in wonderfully complex flavors and aromas.
