Barrel Sample. This organic estate is in conversion to biodynamic practices. The wine is solid in stature, full of dark tannins and concentrated black fruits. Currently resting in 40% new oak, there is plenty of potential to cellar.

The 2019 Haut-Bages-Libéral has turned out superbly, offering up aromas of wild berries, cassis, licorice, rose petals and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless palate, its powdery structuring tannins hidden in an ample core of lively, succulent fruit. From biodynamically farmed vineyards located on clay-limestone and gravel soils to the north of Château Latour (as well as a parcel of gravel sandwiched between Pichon-Baron and Lynch-Bages), this is a terrific effort from an estate that deserves to be much better known.

The 2019 Haut-Bages Libéral is a gorgeous wine from Claire Lurton, even if it has closed down a bit post-bottling. Deep and translucent in feel, the 2019 gradually reveals hints of crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, rose petal and orange peel. I especially admire the overall energy and aromatic presence. All the 2019 needs is a few years to fully come together.

Dark black bramble fruits on the nose with a lovely blackcurrant juiciness - brightness straight away in the mouth, the tannins are supportive, fine and gently gripping and this has a really lovely depth - not too rich or too light, just a very pleasant easy drinkability. You can feel the sculpting of the fruit, firm and muscular, it is well defined and precise but with soft edges and a menthol / liquorice finish common to Pauillac. Power but clarity, cooling flavours and good balance. A great wine. Drinking Window 2023 - 2035.

Leans slightly to the austere side, revealing a ripe, fresh and rather direct beam of cassis and bitter plum fruit lined with a bright iron note. Delivers a dash of savory on the sleek finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2023 through 2032.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.
