About Chateau Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion is a legendary wine estate located in the Pessac-Léognan region of Bordeaux, France. With a history dating back to the 16th century, it is one of the world's oldest and most respected wine producers. Today, it is considered one of the "First Growths" of Bordeaux, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, and Château Latour.

History of Haut-Brion

The origins of Château Haut-Brion can be traced back to 1525, when Jean de Pontac, a wealthy merchant from Bordeaux, purchased the estate. However, it was not until the 17th century that the estate began making wine commercially. In 1666, Arnaud III de Pontac, the great-grandson of Jean de Pontac, built a wine press on the property and began to produce wine under the name "Haut-Brion."

Throughout the centuries, Château Haut-Brion has been owned and operated by several notable figures, including the American financier Clarence Dillon, who purchased the estate in 1935. Under Dillon's ownership, Château Haut-Brion underwent a significant renovation, including constructing a new winery and replanting many of the vineyards.

Haut-Brion Winemaker

Today, Château Haut-Brion is owned by the Dillon family, who are committed to maintaining the estate's long-standing tradition of producing high-quality wines. The current winemaker is Jean-Philippe Delmas, who has been with the estate since 1990. Under his guidance, Château Haut-Brion continues to produce wines highly sought-after by wine enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

Wines of Haut-Brion

The wines of Château Haut-Brion are made primarily from the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. The estate's flagship wine is the Château Haut-Brion Grand Cru Classé, made from a blend of the three primary grape varieties. This wine is known for its rich, complex flavor profile, with notes of dark fruit, spice, and earthiness.

The estate also produces a white wine, the Haut-Brion Blanc, made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes. This wine is known for its fresh, floral aromas and crisp minerality.

Château Haut-Brion is also known for its commitment to sustainable viticulture, with the estate's vineyards being farmed using environmentally-friendly practices. This dedication to preserving the land for future generations ensures that the wines of Château Haut-Brion will continue to be of the highest quality for many years to come.

In conclusion, Château Haut-Brion is a legendary wine estate with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Today, it is considered one of the "First Growths" of Bordeaux and is known for producing highly sought-after wines.
