This 32ha property is owned by the Cuvelier family of Léoville Poyferré. This is great quality, with rich black fruits, clear depth and good form. You could drink it from a carafe now, but a few more years will really see it soften up. The alcohol is just a touch present in the balance, but there is plenty of black fruit to balance it out, and the tannins have been extremely well-smoothed. A touch of Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Warm and ripe with an appealing balance of generosity and dry tannins that follow right through the finish. With more complexity this would score even more highly. Give it two or three years to soften.
Wine Spectator
Fleshy and inviting, with warm plum sauce and steeped blackberry flavors, backed by a brambly spine and light charcoal and roasted apple wood notes. Dark profile, but not too dense, so this is ideal for near-term drinking. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2021. 11,700 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux method of blending quality grape varietals is something which has long been imitated and envied around the world. Whilst there are six Bordeaux grape varietals allowed for the production of red wine in this region of France – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere – the most common and widely used combination involves a careful blend of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, usually with a small percentage of Petit Verdot to boost the overall flavor and balance things out. This process accentuates the finer points of all these varietals, and takes the astringency of one type whilst rounding it out and mellowing it with the light tannins and fleshiness of another. The results are rarely short of spectacular, and are perfect for oak aging, where the flavorful magic of Bordeaux wine making can really take place, and the complex aromas and characteristics can truly come forward.
