Velvety richness and concentration to the plum fruits on the first nose. There is some clear tightness to the fruit, with a pencil lead and crushed stone edge, but the fruits are gourmet and round as they open. A vintage that has firm tannins emphasised by clear liquorice and fresh acidities. Slightly later ripening than Haut-Bailly as a cooler spot. A yield of 37hl/ha. They really have done a great job of making Le Pape one of the 'insider wines' of Pessac-Léognan, with plenty of Haut-Bailly house signature (to the point that it is very much worth looking at instead of HBII, particularly if the price is less).

The 2020 Le Pape is generous, dark, rich and inviting. Black cherry, very elegant, nuanced and charming. Dark cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs are nicely delineated. Le Pape is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. In this vintage it is especially refined and vibrant. I loved it.

Emerging from the incredible team at Haut-Bailly, the 2020 Château Le Pape offers up attractive red fruits, spice, dried flowers, and tobacco notes in a medium-bodied, silky, incredibly elegant package. It shines for its complexity and nuance more than richness and power.
Wine Advocate
90-91 A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot for the 2020 Le Pape was harvested from the 9th, 11th and 15th of September, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on the 25th of September. Deep garnet-purple colored, it wafts sensuously from the glass with beautiful floral notes of lilacs and lavender, giving way to a core of kirsch, fresh blackberries and black cherries, plus hints of menthol and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate is soft, refreshing and delicately flavored, delivering a compelling mineral-laced finish.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The blended red wines of Bordeaux have gone down in history as the finest wines every produced, with collectors and many of the general public still eagerly anticipating the wineries of this region's new releases to this day. The secret to Bordeaux's monumental success has been their careful blending of high quality grape varietals, controlled and protected by French law. In Bordeaux, wineries can only produce red wines using a blend of two or more of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec or Carménere grape varietals, with the latter two becoming less and less commonly seen on bottles. The vast majority of Bordeaux red wines use Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varietals, boosted by a little Petit Verdot. These three grapes compliment each other beautifully as they age in oak, rounded out their tannins and the high astringency of the Sauvignon, and resulting in wonderfully complex flavors and aromas.

Region: Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France is possibly the most famous and widely respected wine region in the world. Known primarily for its exceptional blended red wines, made most commonly with Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grape varietals, it also produces superb dry white wines (both blended and single variety), alongside the highly esteemed sweet wines of Sauternes. All of these wine types use a careful mix of traditional wine-making methods alongside modern techniques, as well as more experimental and unorthodox practices such as turning their grapes over to the noble rot which intensifies the flavors in the sweet wines. Bordeaux benefits greatly from its position amongst wide river basins, and the cooling Atlantic breezes which blow across the rolling vineyards which cover this region.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
