This is a balanced, classic and sculpted Pauillac, if a little quiet. Shows the juicy elegance of a Cabernet-dominanted wine, but lacking some of the seductive edge that you get with Pedesclaux over the last half decade. You have to wait til the 2014 vintage to really get the benefit of the changes made under Jacky Lorenzetti, who arrived in 2009 and made a series of quality-focused changes such as buying higher-quality plots and introducing Petit Verdot (as of 2015). First serious wine ever from Pedesclaux. Full body, with racy tannins, with bright acidity.Tight still. This has more cabernet sauvignon character. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% cabernet franc. Better in 2016.

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2011 Château Pédesclaux offers a vibrant ruby color as well as a pretty, concentrated, elegant style. Cassis, black raspberries, flowers, and a hint of tobacco all emerge from this impressive 2011 that’s a fair click better than the 2010 and goes a long way toward showing the improvements that have been made at this estate.

Vintage: 2011

The year 2011 was an interesting year for many northern and central European countries, as the weather was more than unpredictable in the spring and summer. However, in most countries, the climatic conditions thankfully settled down in the late summer and fall. The result of this slightly difficult year of weather in France was a set of surprisingly small yields, but overall, these yields were of a higher quality than those harvested in certain previous years. A fantastic set of wines was also made in Italy and Spain, and the Rioja wines - when released - are set to be very good indeed. Austria also had superb year in 2011, with almost fifty percent more grapes being grown and used for their distinctive Gruner Veltliner wines than in the year before. Possibly the European country which had the finest 2011, though, was Portugal, with wineries in the Douro region claiming this year to be one of the best in decades for the production of Port wine, and the bright, young Vinho Verdes wines. In the New World, the Pacific Northwest saw some of the best weather of 2011, and Washington State and Oregon reportedly had a highly successful year, especially for the cultivation of high quality red wine grapes. Chile and Argentina had a relatively cool year, which certainly helped retain the character of many of their key grape varietals, and should make for some exciting drinking. South Africa had especially good weather for their white wine grape varietals, particularly Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and many South African wineries are reporting 2011 as one of their best years in recent memory.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux method of blending quality grape varietals is something which has long been imitated and envied around the world. Whilst there are six Bordeaux grape varietals allowed for the production of red wine in this region of France – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere – the most common and widely used combination involves a careful blend of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, usually with a small percentage of Petit Verdot to boost the overall flavor and balance things out. This process accentuates the finer points of all these varietals, and takes the astringency of one type whilst rounding it out and mellowing it with the light tannins and fleshiness of another. The results are rarely short of spectacular, and are perfect for oak aging, where the flavorful magic of Bordeaux wine making can really take place, and the complex aromas and characteristics can truly come forward.

The region benefits greatly from its humid climate, and the fact that its clay and gravel based soils are perfect for growing the fine grape varietals which flourish there.
