A solid 2014 with firm and silky tannins that give the wine tightness and focus. Full body. Lovely fruit and a flavorful finish. Racy and focused. Drink after 2024.

Exceptional balance and clarity - clean and crunchy and just so approachable right now. You still have the Pauillac undertone - dark fruits, integrated liquorice, minerality and a confident tannic structure. It's not as complex as the 2015 but this has such a gentle succulence and easy drinkability to it. The first vintage in the new, modernised cellar.

The 2014 Pédesclaux has a tightly wound bouquet with redcurrant and crushed strawberry fruit, cedar and cigar box aromas filtering through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, plenty of black fruit laced with cedar and black pepper, though it does not quite deliver the complexity that I think the 2015 will on the finish. Still, it is a very capable vintage from the rejuvenated château that is certainly going places in the same way that Pontet-Canet did in the 1990s. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

The 2014 Pédesclaux has a pinched bouquet that even after aeration does not really shine, certainly not like it did just after bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit that sport quite a strong marine-like/brine influence, almost Saint Estèphe in style towards the tertiary, slightly brutish finish that needs a couple of years to calm down. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Fresh and engaging, with a vivid plum and cassis core spiked with anise details and backed by a lightly singed spice note on the finish. Shows a pure graphite edge. Approachable now. Drink now through 2024. 12,500 cases made.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.
