Perfumed and pretty with crushed blackberries and orange peel. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Linear and fine. Drink in 2020.

The 2013 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda sees fruit sourced from the middle part of the Castelletto vineyard where there is a mix of lighter, sandy soils. These loose soils have impacted the wine's distinct character. The bouquet is subdued and graceful. Overall, there is less primary fruit intensity. Instead, the aromas veer towards ethereal tones of licorice, dry hazelnut and medicinal herb. The mouthfeel, on the other hand, is very direct and pointed. The tannins are firm and tight. The wine needs a few more years to get out of this more reticent phase.

Fragrant cherry, tar, licorice and spice notes are underscored by a firm structure in this intense red, which builds to a long, expressive finish, where mouthcoating tannins reside. Best from 2022 through 2037. 300 cases made.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The dusty purple grapes of the Nebbiolo variety are widely considered to be amongst the finest in the world, and hold many unique characteristics which have secured their place in wine making history. Indeed, almost all of the most respected and sought after red wines of Italy are made using this grape varietal, and it wasn't long before several New World wineries started experimenting with the fruit of this special vine, too. Nebbiolo grapes are renowned for their ability to age beautifully, with their strong and dense tannins mellowing out and becoming more balanced inside the oak. Alongside this, they hold some of the most complex and exciting flavors to be found in any grape, which range from gorgeous notes of black truffle, to aromatic violets and tobacco tones.

Situated in the north-western part of Italy, the region of Piedmont is known worldwide and is highly respected for the quality of the wines produced there. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. The region benefits from a range of terroirs which are often well expressed in the sparkling wines, and a wonderfully consistent climate ideal for vineyard cultivation.
