This is polished and perfumed, exuding sandalwood, cloves, blueberries, blackcurrants and myrrh. Touch of eucalyptus. It’s full-bodied, layered and classy, with firm, fine tannins supporting the spiced fruit. Long finish. From a single plot of estate-vineyard cabernet sauvignon. Try from 2026.

92-94 Last of the 2020 barrel samples, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Ciel Vineyard has outstanding aromatics of blackcurrants, chocolate, roasted herbs, and chalky minerality. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, structured wine with building tannins and a great finish.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Ciel is a total pleasure on the nose, marked by cascading florals and peppery herbs, and energized by a whiff of sweet spice. This impresses with its energy and verve, sweeping across the palate with silky textures contrasted by tart red and black fruits. Juicy acidity maintains a lively personality throughout, as the 2020 leaves the mouth watering for more, despite its edgy tannins. This is an easier-drinking and more accessible edition of Grand Ciel, yet no less compelling than usual.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Since their conception in 18th century France, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have flourished across the Old and New Worlds and have changed the way we think about red wine forever. Their sharp and astringent nature has a wonderful ability to mellow and round with age, and when helped by being blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc varietals – as is done in Bordeaux and elsewhere – the results can be truly remarkable. What is most special about Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is the fact that they have a true affinity for oak, and when aged in barrels made of this fragrant wood, the wine which comes out of them a few years later holds an amazing array of flavors and aromas, making Cabernet Sauvignon based wines some of the most memorable in the world. Single variety bottles from the New World made from this grape are also increasing in popularity, as the strong flavors and full-bodied nature of these wines is a great match for many global cuisines.

Since it began in the 1820s, wine-production in Washington state has gone from strength to strength, with many of the finest United States wines coming out over the past twenty years hailing from this region. Today, the state is the second largest US producer of wines, behind California, with over forty thousand acres under vine. The state itself is split into two distinct wine regions, separated by the Cascade Range, which casts an important rain shadow over much of the area. As such, the vast majority of vines are grown and cultivated in the dry, arid desert-like area in the eastern half of the state, with the western half producing less than one percent of the state's wines where it is considerably wetter. Washington state is famed for producing many of the most accessible wines of the country, with Merlot and Chardonnay varietal grapes leading the way, and much experimentation with other varietals characterizing the state's produce in the twenty-first century.
