Cyprien Arlaud's vines cover a total of 1ha in Mazoyères, just below Latricières-Chambertin. Picked in three stages to maximise complexity, this was fermented with 30% whole bunches and aged in 20% new wood. It's right up there with the best expressions of the Grand Cru in 2018, marrying texture and weight to finesse and balance in a Pinot that caresses the palate with red cherry and raspberry fruit. Partially destemmed and brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a smoky, powerful bouquet of mulled black cherries, mulberries, candied violets, licorice, and forest floor. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, gorgeous wine with silky tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, plenty of structure, and a great, great finish. This is seriously good juice that's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is made with 30% whole bunch and 20% new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with iris and incense aromas infusing the black cherry and cassis fruit, quite opulent and yet remaining nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and quite citrus-like in style, although it relinquishes a little precision as it nears the finish.

A hint of licorice and tobacco seeps into the core of cherry, black currant and spice flavors in this muscular red. It tips toward the tannins in balance, yet remains long, with an earthy, leafy finish. Turns lush and charming with air. Best from 2022 through 2032. 150 cases made, 60 cases imported.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

Region: Burgundy

The region of Burgundy has become synonymous with high quality red wines, but in actual fact the region consistently produces a wide variety of fine wines of many different styles, rigorously protected by French wine laws designed to keep reputations and quality at a very high level. The region benefits greatly from a warm and sunny summer climate, which, coupled with the excellent quality soils which typify the region, and centuries of experience and expertise, has led to the region being known all over the world for the excellence of its produce. The majority of grapevines grown here are of the Pinot Noir varietal, which has helped Burgundy become known as the definitive region for elegant and smooth red wines, but Chardonnay grapes and many others are also grown in abundance and used to make both still and sparkling wines.

With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
