Very Mourvèdre, but is it very Gigondas? A question that will be answered when it's mature - for now the varietal side is strong, with gently floral, curranty blueberry and star anise notes. It’s very full-bodied, the acidity on the low side, but this is remarkably concentrated and densely tannic with great sonorous depths and a long, echoing finish. The alcohol is on the high side, but this is a special wine, with those little serrated, fresh Gigondas tannins. A single vineyard selection of about 1ha of Mourvèdre planted in 1922, now in organic conversion, very old vines on blue marls and limestone on a north-facing plot. Grapes are hand-picked and foot crushed. Wine is aged for 18 months in three very old demi-muids. Drinking Window: 2024 - 2030

One of the few truly remarkable Mourvèdres from the Rhône Valley, the 2018 Gigondas Le Plateau comes from vines planted in 1922 on a north-facing site. Aged in used demi-muids, it's rich and velvety, full-bodied, with notes of raspberry compote, cassia bark, juniper and citrus zest. Spicy, complex and richly textured, it lingers on the finish.

93-95 Shimmering magenta. Powerful red/dark berry liqueur aromas are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals and potpourri. A spicy hint of white pepper develops with air. Juicy and concentrated yet lively in style, offering sappy black raspberry, cherry compote and violet pastille flavors and a touch of allspice. The impressively long, focused finish features resonating floral and red berry notes and well-knit tannins that emerge slowly and steadily.

Juicy and youthfully compact, this has a wound-up core of blackberry and dark plum paste flavors that will take a little time to unwind, while tar, anise and roasted alder notes guide this along. Muscular but fresh and focused too, with plenty of pure fruit in reserve. Best from 2022 through 2034. 190 cases made, 30 cases imported.

The southern French wine region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers for over two thousand years, with the first grapevines of the region being cultivated in around 600 BCE when the ancient Greeks arrived with their knowledge of viticulture and eagerness to produce more wine.
