The 2014 Dry Riesling "Eugenia" is a new label, a single vineyard, old vines (35-40 years) Riesling named for Dr. Frank's wife. It comes in with just three grams per liter of residual sugar and 12.6% alcohol. The winery said that this "is made from the oldest section of Riesling at the winery’s estate vineyards on Keuka Lake. This is one of the steepest and most shale-laden sections of the vineyard, contributing to a very distinctive minerality in the wine." It is potentially special, but ridiculously backward just now. Fresh, clean and transparent, this features big acidity and bright flavors on the end, with a touch of grapefruit. The big acidity makes it austere, lean and pointed on first tastes and that doesn't entirely go away, at least not now and not in its youth. Loaded with potential it has not yet achieved, this should be in a much better place in three or four years. It has a long life ahead. Don't rush, don't worry. I'm going to be just a bit conservative now, but it may yet be entitled to an uptick. ... More details

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes are very rarely blended with others in the development of wines, and for good reason. These pale grapes which originated in the cool Rhine Valley of Germany are notable for their 'transparency' of flavor, which allows the characteristics of their terroir to shine through in wonderful ways. The result of this is a wine which carries a wide range of interesting flavors quite unlike those found in other white wines, finished off with the distinctively floral perfume Riesling supplies so well. Many wineries in Germany and elsewhere tend to harvest their Riesling grapes very late – often as late as January – in order to make the most of their natural sweetness. Other methods, such as encouraging the noble rot fungus, help the Riesling grape varietal present some truly unique and exciting flavors in the glass, and the variety of wines this varietal can produce mean it is one of the finest and most interesting available anywhere.

For over four hundred years, New York state has been consistently producing many of the United States finest wines, making the most of the oceanic climate and cool winds which blow over the many vineyards which surround the city. Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.
