The 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard was barrel fermented and aged 12 months in 25% new oak. It offers intense aromas of guava, honeycomb and beeswax with quince paste, apple pie, nutmeg, clove and warm yellow peaches with notes of hay, crushed stone and oodles of chamomile character. Medium-bodied and wonderfully savory/toasty in the mouth, it offers great intensity, juicy acidity and a long, honey-nut finish. 550 cases produced.

An exceptional chardonnay that has excellent structure, depth and length. Aromas of grilled lemons and peaches with a fresh array of toasted nuts and spices. The palate has great composure and impressive, ripe peaches. Long and concentrated. Drink or hold.

Coming from 24-year-old Wente Clone, the 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard has a complex, spicy style in its white peach, flowers, cumin, and baking spice-driven aromas and flavors. It’s another wine from this estate that has notable concentration, the bright acidity of the vintage, terrific mid-palate depth, and a great finish. Give bottles a year or three.

Plush and spicy, with a creamy texture to the blend of ripe white fruit and citrus flavors. Notes of brioche show midpalate, revealing rich toasty and buttery details on the unctuous finish. Drink now through 2025. 528 cases made.

green grapes

Varietal: Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one which has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is the Chardonnay. This green skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape, and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Region: California

Since the 18th century, California has been a hugely important and influential wine region, acting as a trailblazer for other New World wine regions and utilizing an important blend of traditional and contemporary practices, methods and techniques relating to their wine production. Split into four key areas – the North Coast, the Central Coast, the South Coast and the Central Valley – Californian wineries make the most of their ideal climate and rich variety of terrains in order to produce a fascinating range of wines made with a long list of different fine grape varietals. Today, the state has almost half a million acres under vine, and is one of the world's largest wine exporters, with Californian wines being drunk and enjoyed all across the globe.

Country: United States

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.
