Aromas of sliced plums, red licorice, espresso and rosemary. Medium-to full-bodied with velvety tannins. Succulent and clear with lovely black fruit and earthy spice. Broad shouldered but remains elegant. Lovely. Drink or hold.

Moving to the Hermitage releases, the 2018 Hermitage is terrific, and readers will love to have bottles in the cellar. From a great vintage for the Northern Rhône, it has a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet wonderfully elegant profile as well as complex notes of darker fruits, pepper, cured meats, and leather. It gets spicier and more nuanced with time in the glass and already offers pleasure, yet it has the structure and balance to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15+ years.

After seeing this wine two years ago, I have to admit a bit of disappointment with its showing on this occasion. The full-bodied 2018 Hermitage is rich and velvety in feel, with complex aromas and flavors of dried spices, hickory-smoked meat and red raspberries, yet it lacks the profundity and length I was expecting. It's possible I was overenthusiastic last time around or that it's a bit closed down after bottling, but it's still an excellent bottle of wine and could improve with short-term cellaring.

A structured, full-bodied wine with the elegant tannins characteristic of careful barrel ageing. A great wine which deserves patient bottle ageing.

Overview
Moving to the Hermitage releases, the 2018 Hermitage is terrific, and readers will love to have bottles in the cellar. There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.
