The 2015 Alicante Bouschet AB was aged for 12 months in new French oak and comes in at 14.9% alcohol. Of the winery's late-released upper-level wines, this is my favorite. It absorbs the wood the best—although this is a long way from a wine that handles its oak perfectly—and it shows brilliant structure, precision and a big finish that still can express the grape. There's a serious backbone, but the tannins are not hard and this drinks pretty well now, thanks to the late release. While oak-a-phobes will want to look away, this is impressive. It should hold for the next decade, maybe more. There were 556 cases produced.
Winery
COLOUR: Deep, concentrated color. AROMA: Complex varietal aroma with black plum, dark chocolate and slight leather notes. PALATE: The classic tannic structure is complemented by intense fruit and a long, spicy finish.

Country: Portugal

Portugal has been an important center for wine production ever since the Phoenicians and Carthaginians discovered that the many native grape varietals that grow in the country could be cultivated for making excellent wines. After all, Portugal has something of an ideal wine producing climate and terrain; lush green valleys, dry, rocky mountainsides and extremely fertile soil helped by long, hot summers and Atlantic winds. Today, such a climate and range of terroir produces an impressive variety of wines, with the best wines said to be coming out of the Douro region, the Alentejo and the Colares region near Lisbon. Portugal has an appellation system two hundred years older than France's, and much effort is made by regulating bodies to ensure that the quality of the country's produce remains high, and the wines remain representative of the regions they are grown in.
