The intense and high-pitched 2018 Aluvional Gualtallary has finesse, which is the challenge in this very wild zone of the Valle de Uco. This is a powerful zone because of the light and the cold nights, which make it difficult to achieve elegance in the wines, but they have worked in this direction. As with other 2018s, the aromas and flavors are fully developed, so there's more complexity, nuance and depth than in the 2017s, which ripened faster and earlier. A superb mineral Gualtallary with contained ripeness and wildness. 8,000 bottles were filled in August 2019. ... More details

Zuccardi's 2018 Malbec Aluvional (Gualtallary) from the Uco Valley was 30% aged in French oak for 12 months. A dark, vivid purple in color. The compact nose offers ripe fruit such as plum and sour cherry along with hints of jarilla and mint over an oaky backdrop. The terroir and vintage give the 2018 an almost liqueur-like tone. Juicy and potent on the palate with plenty of rich alcohol and good volume. The body increases in heft while maintaining its firm structure. The finish is pure fruit, achieving excellent balance between energy and depth.

Blueberries, blackberries, violets and some stones on the nose. Orange peel, as well. It’s full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a linear, refined finish. So gorgeous and long now, but better after 2023.

green grapes

Varietal: Malbec

The heavy purple bunches of Malbec grapes found growing in many New and Old World countries produce some extremely varied and distinctive wines. Their thick skins have a high tannin content, which means the wines produced from them are generally full-bodied and deep red in color. Single variety Malbec wines tend to be extremely plummy in their flavor, packing a strong punch and making them ideal for matching with spicy foods. However, because of their high malic acid content and their powerful tannins, many wineries use these grapes for blending with more mellow varietals, producing wonderfully complex wines which age beautifully and produce remarkable flavors and aromas. Because of this, Malbec holds the high position of being one of the few grape varietals used in the production of Bordeaux wines, widely recognized as being the finest wines on earth.

Region: Cuyo

The historic mountainous region of Cuyo in central-west Argentina, remains the nation's key wine producing area to this day, producing over eighty percent of the country's wines. Argentinian wines have gone from strength to strength over the past few decades, and it is undoubtedly the region of Cuyo which produces Argentina's most characterful and representative wines. Cuyo's dry and arid soil, rich in iron and other minerals has proven to be an ideal environment for the cultivation of Malbec grapes, alongside several other varietals which thrive in the hot climate and reach full ripeness each autumn, expressing their fruit-forward character. The vineyards of Cuyo are fed by the great Desaguadero River and its tributaries, helped by the extensive irrigation projects which have been undertaken over the past century.

Country: Argentina

As the world's fifth largest producer of wine, after France, Italy, Spain and the United States, Argentina has plenty to offer the international wine market in regards to both quantity and quality. Despite this being the case for several decades now, it has only been since the end of the twentieth century that the Argentinian wine industry has really begun to up their game when it comes to the methods and techniques required to produce world class wines, which are both representative of their country and region of origin, and which stand alone as complex, interesting and delicious wines to drink. As Argentina became a serious contender in the international wine market, wineries previously concerned primarily with high volumes began to change their priorities, and formerly struggling small bodegas and independent wineries began to find success. Nowadays, well crafted wines from smaller vineyards in Argentina are being lauded as some of the finest in the world, and the country is starting to reap the benefits of its heritage, which include some very old vines, and up to four centuries of experience in wine production.
